API pH High Range Test Kit Fresh/Saltwater
Reads pH where a standard kit runs out of scale. The API High Range pH Test Kit measures pH from 7.4 to 8.8 – the band needed for African cichlids, marine and reef tanks, brackish setups and livebearers, where a standard freshwater pH kit tops out at its darkest colour and tells you nothing more.
Key features
- Reads pH 7.4–8.8 – covers the alkaline range standard kits can't resolve.
- Fresh and saltwater – one reagent for African cichlid tanks, marine systems and brackish setups alike.
- Two colour cards included – for comparing accurately across the full range.
- About 160 tests per kit – enough for weekly testing across several tanks for years.
- Simple liquid procedure – drops into a sample, shake, compare against the chart.
How to use it
Fill the supplied test tube with a water sample to the line, add High Range pH Test Solution as directed in the instruction booklet, cap and shake, then compare the colour against the included colour cards in good light. If your standard-range pH kit always reads its darkest colour, that's the signal to switch to this kit rather than assume the tank is fine.

What's included / what you'll still need
Included:
- High Range pH Test Solution reagent bottle
- Capped test tube
- Two colour comparison cards
- Instruction booklet
Not included:
- A standard-range pH test for tanks below 7.4 – API sells this as a separate kit
- Any pH adjustment product
When the reading is out of range
A reading near the bottom of this kit's range (close to 7.4) in a system that should be more alkaline – marine, reef, African cichlid or livebearer – points to insufficient buffering; check KH and consider a buffering product suited to that system. A reading pinned at the top of the chart calls for care rather than more buffer – this kit cannot resolve any higher than 8.8, so a very high reading needs a wider-range test to quantify properly.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for:
- African cichlid tanks, typically kept at pH 7.8–8.6
- Marine and reef aquariums, typically pH 8.0–8.4
- Brackish setups and livebearers such as mollies and platies
Not suitable for:
- Standard community and soft-water tanks below pH 7.4 – use API's standard-range pH kit instead
- Determining KH or alkalinity – this kit reads pH only
Safety
As with any liquid reagent test kit, keep the solution away from children, avoid skin and eye contact, and follow the instruction booklet if the reagent is splashed or swallowed.
Goes well with
- API Freshwater Master Multi Test Kit 5 in 1 – pairs the standard pH range with ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and KH.
- API pH Proper 8.2 – a buffered powder for holding African cichlid or brackish tanks at a stable alkaline pH.
- API pH Up – for raising pH into this kit's readable range.
Warranty and delivery
This is a consumable test kit, so no manufacturer warranty period applies. That does not affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law: if the product is faulty, unsafe or not as described, you are entitled to a remedy.

Common questions
My standard pH kit always reads dark blue – do I need this kit?
Yes. A standard-range API pH kit stops resolving once pH rises above roughly 7.6, so a reading that always looks maximal doesn't tell you whether your tank is at 7.6 or 8.8. This kit reads that upper range specifically.
Does this kit work for both marine and African cichlid tanks?
Yes. Both sit within this kit's 7.4–8.8 range, and API rates the same reagent for fresh and saltwater.
How many tests come in one kit?
Approximately 160, based on API's published pack count.
What if my reading is below 7.4?
Switch to API's standard-range pH kit, which reads accurately below 7.6 and overlaps with the bottom of this kit's range.
