As a general guide, activated carbon exhausts and stops adsorbing well within a few weeks of continuous use — check the water for a return of odour or yellow tinting and swap the cartridge at the first sign, rather than waiting for a calendar date. Running carbon isn't compulsory between changes; some keepers leave the chemical slot empty and rely on the mechanical and biological stages alone.
