Bioscape Aquarium Driftwood Medium
One natural driftwood piece, medium grade, ready to anchor a mid-size aquascape. This Bioscape aquarium driftwood is sold as a single piece, cut and graded "medium" by size – it adds structure for fish to shelter around, a grazing surface for algae-eating species, and the tannins that give a blackwater aquascape its tea-coloured tint.
Key features
- One piece, natural grain – every piece is an individual shape, colour and texture; the product photo is representative, not the exact piece you'll receive.
- Adds structure and shelter – gives shy or territorial fish somewhere to retreat to, and a surface for moss or Anubias to be tied on.
- Releases natural tannins – tints the water amber and softens it slightly, which many blackwater species (tetras, wild bettas, some catfish) prefer.

Bioscape doesn't publish a fixed length or weight for this grade the way it does for some of its named driftwood ranges – pieces are hand-selected to a "medium" size band rather than a stated dimension. If you need a guaranteed size for a size-critical layout, check the piece with us before ordering rather than assuming a specific length.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
- Suitable for: freshwater aquascapes, blackwater setups, and terrarium or paludarium land sections.
- Not suitable for: submerged use in a reef or marine display – tannin release will lower pH, which most reef livestock doesn't tolerate well. It's fine as a dry hardscape element above the waterline in a marine setup.
Care and maintenance
Like most natural driftwood, this piece may float for the first days to weeks until it waterlogs. Weigh it down with rock, a suction mount, or wedge it under other hardscape until it sinks on its own. Rinse it before adding it to the tank, and run new carbon in the filter for the first few weeks if you want to keep the tannin tint from developing.
Goes well with
- Aquarium-safe rock, to weigh the piece down while it waterlogs and to build a mixed hardscape layout
- Filter carbon, if you want to control how strong the tannin tint gets
- Moss or Anubias, both of which attach well to driftwood rather than needing substrate
Warranty and delivery
Natural material, sold and photographed as a representative example – shape and colour vary piece to piece. Any issue on arrival is covered under your consumer guarantee rights under Australian Consumer Law.
Common questions
Will I get the exact piece shown in the photo?
No – the photo is representative of the grade. Every piece is a unique natural shape; that's part of what makes driftwood aquascaping look natural rather than manufactured.
Do I need to soak it before use?
Soaking isn't essential, but it helps the piece sink faster and lets some of the tannin leach out before it goes in the display tank, if you'd rather not deal with the initial colour tint.
Will it hurt my fish or shrimp?
No – driftwood is inert and safe for freshwater fish, shrimp and plants. The main effect is a gradual drop in pH and a tannin tint, both of which many species actively prefer.
