A rinse-and-reuse moss carpet sized for a standard cube terrarium. The Exo Terra Moss Mat Small is a 45 × 45 cm sheet of soft, absorbent moss-textured matting that lines the floor of a standard cube-style terrarium, giving reptiles and amphibians secure footing without the dust, bacterial build-up or impaction risk that comes with loose substrate.

Key features
  • Fits a standard 45 cm cube — sized to cover the floor of the terrariums most keepers already run, with minimal trimming.
  • Firm, non-abrasive grip — the textured surface gives lizards, frogs and other terrarium animals secure footing.
  • Rinse and reuse — lift it, rinse it, disinfect it, put it back. No scooping or replacing loose substrate.
  • Cuttable to fit — trim around a background, water dish or bioactive drainage layer edge.
  • Reduces impaction risk — nothing loose for a feeder to pick up with food, which matters most for ground-feeding species.

Which size do I need?
Size Dimensions Best suited to
Mini 30 × 30 cm Nano terrariums, hatchling and juvenile grow-out tanks, quarantine tubs
Small 45 × 45 cm Standard 45 cm cube and similar footprint terrariums
Medium 60 × 45 cm Longer 60 cm terrariums and enclosures needing a rectangular floor

If your terrarium's floor is rectangular rather than square, the Medium size will need less trimming than the Small.

Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suited to crested geckos, other arboreal and terrestrial geckos, small lizards, frogs and similar species housed in a standard cube terrarium, particularly quarantine, breeding or grow-out setups. Not a substitute for a bioactive substrate in a heavily planted, humidity-driven display, and not a burrowing medium.

Care and maintenance

Rinse under clean running water when soiled, wipe or soak in a reptile-safe disinfectant, rinse again and air dry fully before returning it to the enclosure. Replace once the surface frays or holds odour after cleaning.

Warranty and delivery

Covered by your rights under Australian Consumer Law as a standard terrarium accessory. Ships standard.

Goes well with
  • A reptile-safe disinfectant for routine cleaning between uses
  • A background or hide to sit against the mat
  • The Mini mat for a quarantine tub, or the Medium mat for a larger footprint
Common questions

Will this cover the full floor of a 45 cm cube terrarium?

Yes, at 45 × 45 cm it's cut to match a standard cube terrarium footprint, with minor trimming around any background or fixed decor.

Can I use it in a planted or bioactive terrarium?

It isn't designed to support live plant roots or a cleanup crew, so it suits quarantine, grow-out and simple setups better than a bioactive display.

How often should I replace it?

There's no fixed interval — rinse and disinfect it between uses and replace it once it starts to fray, thin out or hold odour after cleaning.

Is it safe for a crested gecko enclosure with a humidity gradient?

Yes, it copes with regular misting and holds a little moisture, though it isn't a humidity substrate in its own right — pair it with a humid hide if your species needs sustained high humidity.
