Genuine Fluval activated carbon insert, item 19642, sized for both the AquaClear 20 and AquaClear 30 power filters. Supplied three to a pack at 150 g total, it is the chemical filtration stage that clears yellowing water, medication residue and the sulphur-like smell that can follow a big water change or a new bag of driftwood.

Will it fit my filter?
This insert is the shared AC20/30 size and clips into either filter's media basket. It is not the same cartridge used in the AquaClear 50, 70 or 110 – those take their own larger carbon inserts.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for clearing tannin-stained or medication-tinted water and for controlling odour. Not a substitute for regular water changes, and not suitable for use straight after dosing a medication you want to keep in the water column – carbon will strip it out.
Care and maintenance
Activated carbon exhausts within weeks even when it still looks black and clean – the point at which it stops adsorbing is not visible. Replace on a regular rotation rather than by appearance, and remove carbon before dosing any medication you want to stay in the water.

Yes. Item 19642 is the shared insert size for both models.
How do I know when the carbon needs replacing?
Not by colour – exhausted carbon still looks black. Replace it on a routine schedule rather than waiting for a visible sign.
Should I remove carbon before treating the tank with medication?
Yes. Activated carbon will adsorb most medications along with odours and discolouration, reducing the dose reaching the tank.
Does carbon lower nitrate?
No. It removes dissolved organics, odour and discolouration – nitrate control still comes from water changes and biological filtration.
