Fluval Ammonia Remover
Loose zeolite media for whenever a canister-shaped pad won't cut it. Fluval Ammonia Remover is a natural ion-exchange media that pulls toxic ammonia out of the water as it passes through, sold loose by weight with a mesh media bag included so you can portion it into a filter basket, media reactor or sump chamber of any size. It's formulated for freshwater use only.
Which size do I need?
The 1.6 kg bag suits smaller aquariums or topping up an existing media bag between changes. The 2.8 kg bag suits larger systems, sump filtration, or several tanks run off one household's supply. Both are the same media at different weights - only how much you're carrying differs.
Key features
- Natural ion-exchange media - removes ammonia from the water as it flows past, rather than masking it.
- Mesh bag included - drop the media straight into any filter, canister basket, or sump chamber without it scattering loose through the system.
- Suits new and heavily stocked tanks - useful while a tank is cycling, or when stocking density is pushing ammonia up between water changes.
- Works alongside medication - can be used after treating fish, where you want extra help clearing residual ammonia.

Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for freshwater aquariums of any size where the filter has a media compartment. Not suitable for saltwater or reef tanks - the ion-exchange process interferes with the trace elements and salinity balance of marine water.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by Fluval's standard warranty against manufacturing defects, in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
Common questions
Can I use this in a saltwater tank?
No - this media is formulated for freshwater use only and shouldn't be used in marine or reef systems.
Do I need the mesh bag, or does the media come loose?
A mesh bag is included in both sizes, so you can contain the media in your filter without needing a separate bag.
What's the difference between this and the pre-bagged 3 x 180 g pack?
Same media - this is sold loose by weight for filling your own bag or basket, while the 3 x 180 g pack comes pre-portioned into three ready-to-use bags.
How do I know when to replace it?
Fluval doesn't publish a fixed litres-treated figure, since how long the media lasts depends on your ammonia load rather than a set volume of water. Watch your test kit and replace it once readings stop staying down.
