Fluval Ammonia Test Kit 50 Tests
Catch ammonia before it hurts your fish, in fresh or saltwater. The Fluval Ammonia Test Kit is a liquid reagent test that reads total ammonia (NH₃) from 0.0–6.1 mg/L, with 50 tests per kit – enough for close to a year of weekly checks on one aquarium.
Key features
- 50 tests per kit – enough for a weekly test schedule on one aquarium for close to a year.
- Liquid reagent accuracy – colour-comparison testing reads finer gradations than paper test strips, which matters most when a result sits near the danger line.
- 0.0–6.1 mg/L range – covers an established, cycled tank through to a dangerous ammonia spike in a new setup.
- Separate freshwater and saltwater colour charts – ammonia toxicity changes with pH and salinity, so the kit reads the two water types against different reference charts rather than one chart for both.
- Glass test tube and pipette included – no need to buy a separate vial to run a test.

Reading your result
| Zone | Reading | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Green | Below 1.2 mg/L NH₃ | Safe – no action needed |
| Yellow | Above 1.2 mg/L NH₃ | Caution – ammonia is building up |
| Red | Toxic (exact figure depends on pH – see the kit's chart) | Danger – act immediately |
If your result falls in the red zone, do a 20% water change straight away, being careful not to raise the pH while you do it – a pH rise converts more of the ammonia present into its more toxic, un-ionised form. Dose a biological bacterial supplement at double the usual rate to help the tank's filter bacteria catch up.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for freshwater and saltwater aquariums of any size, used on its own or alongside a wider water-testing routine. Not a substitute for a nitrite or nitrate test – ammonia, nitrite and nitrate move through the nitrogen cycle in sequence, and this kit reads ammonia only.
Common questions
How often should I test for ammonia?
Weekly in an established, fully cycled tank. Test more often – every one to two days – while cycling a new tank, after adding a large group of fish, after using medication, or after anything that could stress the biological filter.
Does this kit work in a saltwater tank?
Yes. The kit includes a separate reference chart for saltwater, because ammonia is more toxic at the higher pH typical of a marine system, so the same numeric reading carries different risk in fresh versus saltwater.
How long do the reagents last once opened?
Fluval states best results within the first year after opening. Keep the bottles capped, in their box, and away from direct light to get the full life out of them.
What should I do if I get a red-zone reading?
Do an immediate 20% water change without raising pH, and double-dose a biological bacterial supplement. Retest after 24 hours to confirm the level is falling.
