Fluval Biomax Rings
Porous ceramic rings built to hold more biological capacity than typical bio media, in pack sizes to match FX-series filter baskets. Fluval BioMax uses a complex porous ring design that gives beneficial bacteria a long dwell time as water passes through, helping bring ammonia and nitrate down. It's sold in 500 g and 1,100 g bags.
Key features
- Complex porous structure – designed for extended water contact time rather than just a large outer surface.
- Reduces ammonia and nitrate – biological filtration handles both, not just ammonia.
- Two pack sizes – 500 g and 1,100 g to match smaller and larger filter baskets.
- FX Series media – Fluval markets it specifically for the FX4/FX6 canister range, and as ceramic ring media it works the same way in any canister filter or sump basket sized for loose media.

Will it fit my filter?
Fluval sells BioMax as media for its FX Series canisters (FX4, FX6), and as a ceramic ring media it works the same way in any canister filter or sump basket sized for loose media – pack size is really a question of how much basket volume you have free, rather than a specific model fit.
Care and maintenance
Rinse only in aquarium water removed during a water change, never under the tap – chlorine and chloramine will kill the bacteria living in the rings. Fluval doesn't publish a specific replacement interval for BioMax; as a ceramic media it typically lasts years rather than months, and only needs replacing if it physically breaks down or a basket needs freeing up.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for freshwater and saltwater systems with a canister or sump basket for biological media. Not a mechanical or chemical media – pair it with floss or foam ahead of it in the flow path to stop it clogging with debris.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by Fluval's standard consumer guarantee against manufacturing defects, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Standard freight class.
Common questions
500 g or 1,100 g – which do I need?
Match it to how much basket space your filter has free for biological media. Larger canisters such as the FX4/FX6 generally suit the 1,100 g bag; smaller hang-on-back and internal filters usually suit the 500 g bag.
Can I mix it with Fluval Bio-FX or other ceramic media?
Yes – BioMax is designed to sit alongside other porous ceramic media in the same basket.
Does new BioMax need to cycle before it works?
Yes. Like any new biological media it starts without a bacteria colony, so add it to an established, already-cycled filter where existing media can seed it.
