Fluval Bug Bites Algae Wafers

A sinking wafer built around black soldier fly larvae and Hawaiian spirulina, made for bottom feeders that graze rather than gulp. Fluval Bug Bites Algae Wafers combine insect protein with kelp and spirulina in a dense crisp that holds together on the substrate, giving plecos, ancistrus, corydoras and other bottom-dwelling fish something to work on over hours rather than minutes.

Key features
  • Black soldier fly larvae base – an insect protein source closer to what bottom feeders encounter naturally than a straight fish-meal formula.
  • Spirulina and kelp fortified – plant protein and natural pigment support for algae-grazing species.
  • 43.5% crude protein – from insect, plant and fish sources combined, not a single filler ingredient.
  • Dense wafer format – sinks fast and holds its shape, so it isn't stripped by faster mid-water fish before it reaches the bottom.
  • No artificial fillers or preservatives – preserved with mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract instead.

Feeding directions

Drop one or two wafers per fish onto the substrate. Feed as much as fish will clear in a couple of hours, once or twice daily, and remove uneaten wafer after 24 hours to keep water quality up.

Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suitable for plecos, ancistrus, corydoras, loaches and other bottom-feeding freshwater and marine grazers such as blennies and gobies. Not a complete diet on its own for fast-swimming mid-water or surface feeders, who will rarely follow a wafer down to the substrate – pair with a flake or pellet for those species in a mixed tank.

Goes well with

Fluval Bug Bites Tropical Flakes or Granules for mid-water feeders sharing the same tank, and a feeding tong or clip for holding the wafer against the glass in tanks with strong bottom currents.

Warranty and delivery

Covered by the manufacturer's freshness guarantee in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Best used within 6 months of opening; store sealed in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.

Common questions

Will this cloud the water if it's not eaten straight away?

The wafer holds its shape rather than dissolving, so uneaten wafer is easy to spot and remove – clear out anything left after 24 hours.

Can I feed this alongside flake food?

Yes. Bug Bites Algae Wafers are designed as the bottom-feeder half of a mixed feeding routine, alongside a flake or granule for fish higher in the water column.

Is it safe with shrimp and other invertebrates?

Use with caution. Shrimp meal and a small, standard mineral inclusion of copper sulfate are typical of commercial fish diets and present in this formula – keep it away from copper-sensitive invertebrates such as ornamental shrimp if you target-feed rather than let the whole tank graze.

Which size should I buy?

The 40 g pack suits a single small tank; the 100 g and 480 g packs work out cheaper per gram for larger collections or multiple bottom feeders, provided you can use the pack within its shelf life once opened.
