Fluval C3 Hang On Filter Bio-Screen
Gives beneficial bacteria somewhere to live and spreads water evenly through the biological stage. This is the genuine Fluval Bio-Screen (item 14021) for the C3 Power Filter – a three-pack of biological media that sits over the trickle chamber, doing double duty as a colonisation surface and a coarse debris trap.
Key features
- Biological surface area – gives nitrifying bacteria a place to establish, on top of what the BIOMAX nodes underneath provide.
- Even flow distribution – spreads water across the trickle chamber rather than letting it channel through one spot.
- Secondary debris capture – catches fine particles the foam pad ahead of it misses.
- Three screens per pack – genuine Fluval item 14021, sized for the C3 trickle chamber.

Will it fit my filter?
Fits the trickle chamber of the Fluval C3 Power Filter only – it is not interchangeable with the C2 or C4 bio-screen, which are sized to their own housings.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
- Suitable for freshwater and saltwater tanks running a Fluval C3 Power Filter.
- Not suitable to replace all at once alongside every other media type – doing so removes most of the filter's established bacteria in one go.
Care and maintenance
Fluval doesn't publish a fixed replacement schedule for the bio-screen – it's a longer-lived biological substrate rather than a consumable on a fixed clock. Rinse it gently in removed tank water during routine filter maintenance to clear trapped debris, and only replace it once it's torn or so clogged that flow through the trickle chamber is visibly reduced.
Goes well with
- Fluval C3 Foam Pad (item 14006) – the mechanical stage ahead of this one.
- Fluval C3 Activated Carbon (item 14012) – the chemical polishing stage that follows.
- Fluval C3 Ammonia Remover (item 14015) – extra ammonia control for freshwater tanks while the biological colony is still establishing.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by Fluval's standard replacement-media warranty against manufacturing defects, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Ships as a standard parcel.
Common questions
How often should I replace the bio-screen?
There's no fixed schedule from Fluval – rinse it during routine maintenance and only replace it when it's torn or heavily clogged.
What does the bio-screen actually do?
It gives bacteria a surface to live on, spreads water evenly into the trickle chamber, and catches fine debris the foam pad ahead of it lets through.
Should I replace all my filter media at the same time?
No – stagger it. Replacing every stage at once strips most of the bacteria colony from the filter in one go.
Will this fit my C2 or C4 filter?
No. Each C-series size uses its own bio-screen.
