Fluval Chemical Cartridge G3
The cartridge that keeps a G3 running crystal clear between services. This is the genuine chemical-stage cartridge for the Fluval G3 Advanced Filtration System — a sealed shell of granulated chemical filter media that slots into the top of the canister for a quick, mess-free swap.
Key features
- Granulated chemical media — polishes water and helps keep it visually clear.
- Top-loading cartridge — accessed from the top of the G3 without disturbing the mechanical or biological stages below.
- Sealed, no-mess format — no loose granules to spill during a change.
- Purpose-built for the G3 — shaped to seat correctly in the G3's chemical stage housing only.

Will this fit my filter?
This cartridge is sized specifically for the Fluval G3 (rated for aquariums 150–300 L / 40–80 US gal) and its chemical-stage housing. It does not fit the larger G6, which uses its own chemical cartridge (Fluval A426) — check your filter's model plate before ordering.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for freshwater and marine aquariums running a G3. Not a stand-alone filter — it replaces only the chemical stage; the G3's mechanical pre-filter and G-Nodes biological media are separate consumables.
Care and maintenance
Fluval's own G-Series guidance calls for the chemical cartridge to be changed every 15–30 days depending on how hard the media is working — sooner in a heavily stocked or recently medicated tank. The mechanical pre-filter is on a separate, more frequent 14-day cycle and shouldn't be confused with this one.
Common questions
How do I know when it needs changing?
Watch water clarity rather than the calendar alone — if clarity drops before the 15–30 day mark, change it early; the G3's flow indicator will also flag reduced flow if the stage ahead of it is due.
Can I use this in a G6?
No — the G6 takes its own chemical cartridge (Fluval A426), which is a different size for the larger housing.
What does it actually remove?
Granulated chemical media of this type is aimed at general water polishing and clarity rather than a specific contaminant — for targeted removal of ammonia, nitrate or phosphate, Fluval also sells dedicated cartridges for the G-Series.
