Fluval CHI Aquarium Impeller
Restore proper flow to a Fluval CHI whose pump has gone weak or noisy. This is the genuine magnetic impeller – the small rotor inside the pump housing that drives water through the filter cube – sized for the Fluval CHI and Fluval CHI II 5 US gallon (19 L) aquarium kit, model 10505.
Key features
- Genuine Fluval part A13979 – the magnetic impeller fitted inside the CHI's pump housing.
- Fixes the most common flow problem – impellers wear from mineral build-up and daily use well before the pump motor itself fails.
- No tools required – lift the filter cube, unclip the motor housing and swap the impeller in.
- A wear item – Fluval's own care guide notes the impeller isn't covered by warranty and is designed to be a routine, low-cost swap.

Will it fit my filter?
Check the model plate on the base of your unit – this impeller is sized for the 5 US gallon (19 L) Fluval CHI and Fluval CHI II, model 10505. We haven't been able to confirm whether this same impeller fits the larger 25 L (6.6 US gal) Fluval CHI II, model 10508, which appears to use its own part – check with us before ordering if you have that model.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable as a routine wear-part replacement for the 5 US gallon (19 L) CHI or CHI II pump. Not covered by Fluval's standard warranty, which treats the impeller as a consumable wear item – that's normal for this part, not a fault.
Care and maintenance
Fluval's care guide recommends removing the pump motor and cleaning the impeller every 6 months to clear mineral build-up and keep flow steady. Replace it outright, rather than cleaning it, once the fins or shaft show visible wear or cracking, or the pump starts rattling.
Common questions
How do I know my impeller needs replacing?
Reduced or stopped water flow, a grinding or rattling noise from the filter cube, or the pump failing to restart after cleaning are the usual signs. These are wear symptoms, not defects.
Is this covered under warranty?
No – Fluval classes the impeller as a wear item excluded from its standard warranty, the same as any consumable part subject to everyday use.
Do I need any tools to fit it?
No. Lift the rotating top cube, unclip the pump motor housing, and press the new impeller into place.
Warranty and delivery
As a wear item this part sits outside Fluval's standard warranty, but you're still covered by your rights under Australian Consumer Law for a part that's defective on arrival. Small item – standard parcel delivery Australia-wide.
