Fluval Water Conditioner

One dose makes tap water safe for fish by neutralising the chlorine and chloramine your water supplier adds to keep it safe for humans. Fluval Water Conditioner is a fast-acting dechlorinator for use before any water change or new tank fill, formulated to work without clouding the water. It's sold in five sizes – 30 mL through to 2 L – so you can match the bottle to a single starter tank or a busy multi-tank fishroom.

Key features
  • Neutralises chlorine and chloramine – the two chemicals municipal water treatment adds that are toxic to fish gills
  • Removes undesirable metals – Fluval doesn't name the specific metals covered, so treat this as general heavy-metal neutralisation rather than a targeted claim
  • Coats scales and fins – an added colloid compound that helps protect against minor scrapes and cuts, on top of dechlorination
  • For freshwater and saltwater aquariums
Dosage and directions
Standard dose (chlorine + metals) 5 mL per 37.85 L (10 US gal) of new water
Full-protection dose (chloramine + scale/fin coating) 10 mL per 37.85 L (10 US gal) of new water

Fluval states that overdosing poses no danger to fish, so it's safe to round up rather than under-dose. It isn't amine-based, so it's compatible with resin-based filter media.

Which size do I need?

The figures below show how many litres each bottle treats at the standard dose, calculated from Fluval's own 5 mL per 37.85 L dosing rate.

Size SKU Litres treated (standard dose)
30 mL FLS01 ~227 L
120 mL FLS02 ~908 L
250 mL FLS03 ~1,893 L
500 mL FLS04 ~3,785 L
2 L FLS05 ~15,140 L

The 30 mL bottle suits a single small tank or a one-off top-up. If you're conditioning water regularly – weekly water changes on anything from a 60 L tank up – the 500 mL or 2 L bottle earns its price back quickly.

What it doesn't do

Fluval doesn't market this as an ammonia binder. If you're dealing with elevated ammonia – during tank cycling, for example – you'll need a dedicated ammonia-detoxifying product alongside it, not instead of it.

Suitable for, and not suitable for
  • Suitable for freshwater and saltwater aquariums, as a standard step before water changes or when filling a new tank
  • Not marketed as an ammonia detoxifier – pair with an ammonia-specific product if you need that cover
  • Fluval doesn't publish a full ingredient list; the active formulation is described only as a proprietary blend of herbal extracts and a colloid protective compound
Warranty and delivery

Covered by your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Store in a cool, dry place, out of high heat, and don't freeze the concentrate for extended periods. Ships as a standard parcel; the 2 L size ships in its own carton due to weight.

Common questions

Will this remove ammonia as well as chlorine?

No – Fluval doesn't market Water Conditioner as an ammonia binder. It neutralises chlorine and chloramine and adds a protective coating; use a dedicated ammonia product if ammonia is the issue.

Can I use too much?

Fluval states overdosing poses no danger to fish, so if you're unsure of your exact water volume, it's safer to round the dose up than down.

Is it safe for saltwater tanks?

Yes – Fluval markets this product for both freshwater and saltwater aquariums.

Which size should I buy?

Work out roughly how many litres of new water you condition per month. Occasional small water changes suit the 30 mL or 120 mL bottle; if you're conditioning more than a few hundred litres a month, the 500 mL or 2 L size costs a fraction as much per litre.

Does it cloud the water?

Fluval's own copy states it works without clouding the water or leaving residue.
