Ultra Sun Trichromatic T8 Tube

A 6,500 K daylight tube that shows fish and coral colours truly. The Zoo Med Ultra Sun is a T8 fluorescent tube (T8 is the standard 25 mm, or 1 inch, tube size) giving trichromatic full spectrum daylight at 6,500 K. Zoo Med rates it at a CRI of 98 (colour rendering index, a 0 to 100 score of how naturally a light shows colours), for viewing freshwater and marine fish and live corals. This listing has two sizes: 18 inch at 15 W and 24 inch at 17 W.

Key features
  • CRI of 98, so colours look close to how they do in daylight.
  • 6,500 K trichromatic output (light built from three colour bands) with visible light and UVA.
  • Promotes photosynthesis in plants and marine algae, according to Zoo Med.
  • Effective for up to 10,000 hours, Zoo Med's rating.
  • Made in Germany.
Specifications
  • 18 inch (about 46 cm): 15 W, Zoo Med item UL-18
  • 24 inch (about 61 cm): 17 W, Zoo Med item UL-24
  • Lamp type: T8 linear fluorescent
  • Colour temperature: 6,500 K
  • Colour rendering index: 98
  • Rated life: up to 10,000 hours
Suitable for, and not suitable for

Zoo Med lists it for all freshwater and marine fish and for reef tanks. It needs a T8 fixture made for the matching length and wattage; many metric fixtures take a 600 mm 18 W tube rather than a 24 inch 17 W one, so check the tube already in your fixture before ordering. Zoo Med lists visible light and UVA only, so it is not a UVB lamp for reptiles. It does not fit T5 fixtures.

Care

Switch off and let the tube cool before handling, and wipe water spots off the glass. Colour and brightness fade with age, so replace the tube by hours used rather than waiting for it to fail.

Safety

The tube contains mercury, so take a used tube to a lamp or fluorescent recycling drop-off rather than the household bin.

Warranty and delivery

Covered by Zoo Med's 1 year warranty, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Ships by standard parcel post.
