Zoo Med Hermit Crab Assorted Growth Shells

A spare shell on hand means a hermit crab never has to fight for its next home. The Zoo Med Hermit Crab Assorted Growth Shells is a natural, hermit-crab-safe shell offered in an assortment of shapes so a crab outgrowing its current shell has somewhere appropriately sized to move into.

Key features
  • Genuine natural shell – sourced and sold by Zoo Med specifically for hermit crab housing, not a decorative or aquarium-only shell.
  • Assorted shapes and openings – gives a crab a choice, which matters, because hermit crabs are selective about opening size and shape before they'll commit to a new shell.
  • Supports natural growth – land hermit crabs must periodically move to a larger shell as they grow; without a suitable spare on hand, they can't do this safely.
  • Simple crabitat addition – no assembly, no soaking required before use.
Specifications
Field Detail
Brand Zoo Med
SKU BA8893
Type Natural hermit crab growth shell, assorted

Zoo Med sells growth shells in graded Small, Medium, Large and X-Large packs (item numbers HC-35 to HC-38); this assorted listing does not specify which size grade or how many shells are included, so treat it as a mixed assortment rather than a guaranteed size run – see Common questions.

Suitable for, and not suitable for
  • Suitable for: land hermit crabs (Coenobita species) that need a new shell to grow into, or keepers who like to offer a choice of spares in the crabitat at all times.
  • Not suitable for: painted, dyed or artificially decorated shells – this is a natural, undecorated shell, and painted alternatives can flake toxic coatings into the crabitat.
Care and maintenance

Rinse before adding to the crabitat. Keep two or three spare shells in a range of sizes available at all times – a crab that can't find a suitable new shell when it needs one will delay moulting, which is a genuine welfare risk.

Goes well with
  • Zoo Med Hermit Crab Bright Bowls, for the fresh and salt water every crab needs alongside its shell supply
  • A hydrometer, to keep the salt water bowl at the correct marine gravity
  • Coco fibre or sand substrate deep enough for burrowing during a moult
Warranty and delivery

Sold with the standard Zoo Med retail warranty against manufacturing defects, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Standard freight.

Common questions

What size shells are in this pack?

Zoo Med doesn't specify a size grade or shell count for this particular "assorted" listing. If you need a guaranteed size – Small, Medium, Large or X-Large – check with us before ordering, or ask us to confirm the current stock against Zoo Med's graded packs.

How many spare shells should I keep on hand?

As a general rule, two to three correctly sized spares per crab, since hermit crabs are particular about opening size and shape and may reject the first option offered.

Can I paint or decorate the shell?

No – offer it as supplied. Painted or artificially coated shells can shed material a crab will ingest, and Zoo Med's growth shells are sold natural and undecorated for this reason.

My crab won't move into its new shell – what now?

This is common. Offer several sizes and shapes at once, keep humidity and both water bowls topped up, and be patient – a crab will generally move when it's genuinely ready, not on request.
