Bolivian Chain Sword Care Guide (Helanthium bolivianum)
The Bolivian chain sword is one of the easiest grassy plants in the freshwater hobby: a rosette (a rooted plant that grows as a spreading whorl of leaves from a single central crown) that throws out horizontal runners, each carrying a chain of little daughter plants that root where they touch down. Depending on the form and your lighting it reads either as a low grassy tuft or as a taller, flowing, grass-like sword that fills the midground and reaches back into the background, and it does all of this without asking for injected carbon dioxide or bright light. Hobbyists like it for the soft, natural, meadow-like texture it lends a layout, and for how willingly it spreads itself into a stand.
1. Species Overview
The Bolivian chain sword belongs to Helanthium, a small genus in the water-plantain family (Alismataceae) from the Americas — the same family as the true Echinodorus swords — and its name carries exactly the tangle you would expect from a plant that has been passed around the trade for a century. The accepted botanical name today is Helanthium bolivianum. It was first described by the botanist H. H. Rusby as Alisma bolivianum, then spent decades inside the genus Echinodorus — as Echinodorus bolivianus, and under a raft of other names such as E. quadricostatus, E. latifolius, E. angustifolius and E. austroamericanus — before Lehtonen and Myllys separated this small group of chain swords out of Echinodorus and into the reinstated genus Helanthium in 2008. So a plant you may still see labelled Echinodorus bolivianus or Echinodorus quadricostatus is, to a botanist, this same species wearing an older coat. We list it under two names — Bolivian Chain Sword and Bolivian Chain Sword (Rusby) — and it is worth saying plainly that these are the same plant: the "(Rusby)" is simply the botanical authority, the person who first described the species, and not a separate variety, size or collection locality.
In the wild it grows along river margins and seasonally flooded ground across tropical and southern South America, so it lives happily both submersed and emersed (grown with its leaves above the water); nurseries usually raise it emersed, which is why a freshly planted portion often sheds a few of its first leaves and grows new submersed ones. Helanthium bolivianum is a genuinely variable species, and its forms differ mainly in leaf width and final height — the broad-leaved, low-growing selections make a short grassy lawn, while the narrower-leaved forms grow into tall, flowing, grass-like blades reminiscent of a fine Vallisneria. 2. Difficulty Level and Suitability
By every measure that matters this is an easy, beginner-friendly plant, and the sources are unanimous about it: Tropica, Flowgrow, Aquasabi, Dennerle and Aquarium Co-Op all rate it easy. It needs no injected carbon dioxide, grows under modest light, tolerates a wide span of temperature and hardness, and asks very little once it has settled — which makes it a natural choice for a first planted tank, a low-tech community aquarium, or a cooler, unheated set-up. Only two things tend to catch people out, and neither is about water chemistry. The first is that, like all the swords, it is a rosette that feeds mainly through its roots, so in bare inert gravel with nothing to draw on it grows pale and thin; give it a nourishing root zone and that worry disappears. The second is the opposite of a problem for most keepers — it can spread enthusiastically by runners, so in a smaller tank you will be thinning it now and then to stop it colonising ground you had earmarked for something else.
3. Water Parameters
This is an adaptable plant that cares far more about a fed root zone and steady conditions than about hitting exact figures, and reputable sources quote wide, overlapping bands. Treat the numbers below as comfortable targets rather than strict limits.

The main thing to watch is that the plant is being fed at the roots and given enough trace elements: pale, washed-out new leaves usually point to a hungry substrate or a shortage of iron rather than to anything wrong with the water itself.
4. Lighting Requirements
The Bolivian chain sword is not a light-hungry plant, and this is one place the sources genuinely disagree, so it is worth understanding the spread rather than glossing over it. Tropica rates it usable from low right through to high light, Dennerle and Aquarium Co-Op both put it in the low-to-medium bracket — Aquarium Co-Op quotes a concrete 10–35 PAR (PAR is photosynthetically active radiation, a measure of usable light reaching the plant) — while Flowgrow rates its demand medium to high. On the framework our coral guides use, where for plants low is roughly 30–50 PAR, medium 50–80 and high 80 or more (bands that differ from the coral figures), that 10–35 PAR sits at or just below the low end, which tells you this plant will grow in genuinely modest light. What the light really changes is the plant's habit: under brighter light it stays shorter, denser and more compact, with better colour and a more lawn-like form, while under dimmer light it stretches taller and more open, throwing up long grass-like blades that reach for the surface — which is exactly the growth you want when you are using it as a flowing midground-to-background plant. If you move it into a much brighter tank, raise the light gradually over a week or two so it can acclimatise.
5. CO₂ and Fertilisation
Plants grow by photosynthesis, using light to turn carbon dioxide and nutrients into new tissue, so more available carbon usually means faster growth — but with the Bolivian chain sword extra CO₂ is firmly optional. Aquarium Co-Op lists its CO₂ requirement as none, Dennerle says it thrives in low-tech tanks without a cylinder, Tropica rates its demand low and Aquasabi calls injected carbon beneficial but not necessary; Flowgrow suggests a level of roughly 10–40 mg/l only if you do choose to run it. Added CO₂ simply speeds growth and helps the plant knit into a denser stand — it is never a condition of keeping it alive. Feeding, on the other hand, matters, because this is a rosette that eats chiefly through its roots. The single most useful thing you can do is give it a rich root zone: plant it into a nutrient substrate or aquarium soil, or push root tabs into the gravel around it and replenish them every couple of months. Because it grows quickly it also appreciates a modest all-round liquid fertiliser in the water column, and a little extra iron and trace elements keeps the new leaves a healthy green rather than pale and translucent.
6. Planting and Placement
The Bolivian chain sword grows from a central crown — the compact point where all the leaves and roots meet — and the single most important rule is this: never bury the crown. Set each plantlet so its crown sits right at the surface of the substrate, with the roots spread and fanning down beneath it; cover the crown and it will usually rot. If a potted plant arrives wrapped in rockwool, gently tease the wool away from the roots first, and separate a dense clump into a few smaller portions so each has room to establish. Give it a reasonably deep, nutrient-rich bed to root into. In use it is best thought of as a grass-like midground plant that reaches into the background: the broad-leaved, brightly lit expression may sit at only around 10–15 cm, while the narrower-leaved forms and plants grown in softer light can climb to 40–50 cm, occasionally taller, so leave enough room and expect it to knit outward. Its fine, flowing texture works beautifully as a contrast against broad-leaved plants such as anubias, crypts or larger swords, and as a soft screen for the back corners of a tank. It spreads by runners into a continuous stand, so plant a few portions with a little space between them and let them fill in, then thin as needed.
7. Growth Rate and Propagation
Growth is fast once the plant has settled, though a newly planted portion often pauses for a week or two — sometimes melting back a leaf or two — while it swaps its emersed nursery leaves for submersed ones, so do not be alarmed by early stillness. Propagation is where this plant earns its name and its reputation for easy multiplication: it sends out horizontal runners across the substrate, and along each runner a chain of small daughter plants (adventitious plantlets) forms and roots itself, one after another. You can simply let these fill in to make a stand, or, once a plantlet carries several leaves and its own roots, snip it free and replant it elsewhere with the crown sitting above the substrate. A large, congested clump can also be lifted and divided through the crown with a clean blade, giving each piece its own roots and leaves. Grown emersed, or with its leaves reaching the surface, an established plant may push up a slender flower stalk and small white flowers.
8. Common Issues and Troubleshooting
Most problems with this plant come down to feeding and settling in rather than to disease. The commonest early worry is leaf loss: a nursery plant grown emersed will often shed or melt back some of its first leaves in the weeks after planting, which looks alarming but is simply the plant switching to submersed growth — leave the crown undisturbed and healthy new blades will follow. Pale, washed-out or yellowing new leaves are the classic sign of a hungry root zone or a shortage of iron and trace elements, a deficiency Aquasabi and Flowgrow both flag for this plant; the cure is root tabs plus a trace or iron supplement rather than anything you do to the water. If the whole plant softens and rots from the middle, the crown has almost certainly been buried too deep — lift it and replant with the crown clear of the substrate. Because it grows fast and runs freely, its more likely nuisance is spreading further than you wanted, so pull or trim stray runners to keep it in bounds. If growth stalls, older leaves can gather algae, particularly under strong light with little to feed on; the fix is to get it growing again by feeding the roots and to keep the light moderate rather than blasting it. Finally, remember that light shapes its height — if it is growing too tall and floppy, more light will bring it shorter and denser, while dialling the light back lets it stretch into the taller grassy look.
