Overview and Natural Origin
Butterflyfish are among the most recognisable fish on the coral reef: small, brightly patterned, disc-shaped grazers that dart between coral heads and rocky ledges by day and tuck into crevices at night. The family Chaetodontidae contains well over 100 species distributed mainly across the tropical Indo-West Pacific, with smaller representation in the eastern Pacific, the Atlantic and the Red Sea. Several species kept in Australian aquariums, such as the Marginal Butterflyfish, are found nowhere else in the world, making Australia an important source region for wild-collected butterflyfish stock.
On the reef, butterflyfish occupy a wide range of habitats — clear outer reef slopes, current-swept drop-offs, sheltered lagoons, coral bommies and rubble zones — and many are found in permanently bonded pairs that patrol a defended territory together for years. Their bodies are built for this environment: a laterally compressed, disc-like shape lets them slip between coral branches and tight crevices, while an elongated, often tube-like snout allows many species to extract small invertebrates, worms and coral polyps from places other reef fish cannot reach. Species such as the Longnose Butterflyfish and Copperband Butterflyfish carry this snout adaptation to an extreme, with jaw length exceeding a quarter of total body length in some cases.
Appearance and Size
Despite their diversity, butterflyfish share a recognisable body plan: a thin, tall, laterally flattened disc, strongly sheathed dorsal and anal fin spines, and small ctenoid scales that extend onto the soft parts of the fins. Bold eye stripes, body bars, chevrons and contrasting yellow, white, black and blue markings are used for species recognition, camouflage against coral backgrounds, and social signalling between paired individuals. Bannerfish and the related Moorish Idol (not a true butterflyfish, though often displayed alongside them) carry this further with elongated, trailing dorsal filaments that create dramatic movement in open water.
Most butterflyfish species kept in the aquarium trade top out between 12 cm and 23 cm as adults. Snout shape varies with feeding ecology: short-jawed species such as the Chaetodon butterflies pick at algae, small invertebrates and coral polyps at close range, while long-snouted specialists such as Chelmon and Forcipiger species probe deep into rock and coral crevices for hidden prey.
Species Commonly Stocked
The species below reflect what Nick's Aquarium Oceanarium Terrarium has stocked under its Marine Fish – Butterflyfish range. Feeding difficulty and coral dependency vary enormously across this list — read this section carefully before choosing a species, as it is the single biggest factor in long-term survival.
- Copperband Butterflyfish (Chelmon rostratus): To around 20 cm. Prized as a natural aiptasia hunter, but has a well-earned reputation as a shy, deliberate, difficult feeder. Many wild-caught individuals refuse to eat in the first days to weeks after arrival and can starve without patient, varied live and frozen feeding. Best suited to advanced keepers with a mature, established aquarium. Reef safe with caution — may pick at feather dusters, small worms and some fleshy invertebrates once settled.
- Marginal Butterfly Fish (Chelmon marginalis): To around 18 cm. An Australian-endemic cousin of the Copperband, sharing the same long snout and a similar diet of small benthic crustaceans and worms picked from live rock. Feeding difficulty and temperament closely mirror the Copperband, so it is best kept by patient, experienced marine keepers with a mature reef or FOWLR system. Reef safe with caution.
- Threadfin (Auriga) Butterflyfish (Chaetodon auriga): To around 20–23 cm. One of the most consistently good eaters in the family and a genuine hardy classic, but also one of the more assertive and territorial butterflyfish, especially toward other Chaetodon. Will sample coral polyps, clam mantles, zoanthids and aiptasia, so it is not reef safe despite its hardiness.
- Klein's Butterflyfish (Chaetodon kleinii): To around 15 cm. Widely regarded as one of the hardiest and most adaptable butterflyfish available, and a genuine option for a first-time butterflyfish keeper — it typically transitions onto prepared foods quickly. Still not a reliable reef fish, as it may nip soft corals, LPS and anemones.
- Bluespot Butterflyfish (Chaetodon plebeius): To around 15 cm. Feeds predominantly on live coral polyps in the wild, making it one of the most demanding and least suitable species on this list for long-term captive care. Classed as an advanced fish for a fish-only display only, and a poor candidate for keepers who cannot commit to constant, coral-based or highly enriched feeding regimes.
- Dot Dash Butterflyfish (Chaetodon punctatofasciatus): To around 12 cm. An attractive, compact omnivorous grazer that will sample coral polyps and sessile invertebrates in the wild, so it needs a fish-only or carefully stocked setting and a keeper prepared to work through a settling-in period with a varied diet.
- Longnose Butterflyfish (Forcipiger flavissimus): To around 22 cm. Its tweezer-like snout is adapted for picking small invertebrates out of rock crevices. One of the more manageable non-Chaetodon species and a reasonable option for a patient intermediate keeper, but it should still be verified as feeding well before purchase, as thin, unfed individuals decline quickly. Reef safe with caution.
- Longnose Butterfly Pair (Forcipiger longirostris): To around 22 cm. The "Big Longnose," distinguished by an even longer snout than F. flavissimus and a diet built around deep-crevice prey such as polychaete tentacles and echinoderm tube feet. Generally considered a more specialised, slightly more advanced feeder than the Yellow Longnose. Reef safe with caution.
- Pyramid Butterflyfish (Hemitaurichthys polylepis): To around 18 cm. A dedicated open-water planktivore and one of the genuinely reef-safe members of the family, since it largely ignores sessile invertebrates in favour of drifting zooplankton. Unusually for a butterflyfish it can be kept in small groups, and it typically adapts to prepared foods without great difficulty provided it is fed several small meals a day.
- Black Pyramid Butterflyfish (Hemitaurichthys zoster): To around 18 cm. A close relative of the Pyramid Butterflyfish with the same hardy, easy-feeding, shoaling nature and generally reef-safe status, occasionally sampling ornamental tubeworms. A good introductory choice for keepers wanting a reef-compatible schooling butterflyfish.
- Schooling Bannerfish (Heniochus diphreutes): To around 21 cm. The hardiest and most reef-tolerant member of the Heniochus genus, noticeably more forgiving than the similar-looking Pennant/Longfin Bannerfish (H. acuminatus). A committed planktivore that does best in a small group, though like all Heniochus it may still pick at small polyps and tubeworms if underfed.
- Stripey (Microcanthus joyceae): To around 12 cm. Sold and displayed alongside the store's true butterflyfish for its black-and-yellow banded, disc-shaped resemblance, but it is not actually a member of Chaetodontidae — it is a sea chub (family Kyphosidae, subfamily Microcanthinae) native to subtropical and temperate eastern Australian waters. It is a hardy, easy omnivorous feeder and a useful aiptasia grazer, making it a far more forgiving choice than most true butterflyfish, though it may still nip at prized LPS corals.
Tank and Water Requirements
Butterflyfish should only be added to a fully cycled, well-established marine aquarium — ideally one that has been running for many months and has developed a healthy population of live rock microfauna (copepods, amphipods and other pods) that the fish can graze between feedings. Minimum tank size varies with adult size and swimming behaviour: compact species such as the Dot Dash or Klein's Butterflyfish can be kept in around 250–350 L, while active, larger-growing or schooling species such as the Schooling Bannerfish, Pyramid Butterflyfish and Longnose Butterfly Pair need 500–600 L or more, particularly if kept in a group.

Diet and Feeding
Diet and feeding difficulty are the single most important factors to understand before buying any butterflyfish, and they vary enormously across the family. Broadly, the species stocked here fall into four groups:
- Planktivores (Pyramid Butterflyfish, Black Pyramid Butterflyfish, Schooling Bannerfish) feed on drifting zooplankton in open water. These are generally the easiest butterflyfish to keep well, adapting readily to enriched frozen mysis, brine shrimp, copepods and quality marine pellets, provided they are fed small amounts several times a day.
- Omnivorous grazers/pickers (Klein's, Threadfin/Auriga, Dot Dash Butterflyfish) take a broad mix of algae, sponge, worms, small crustaceans and, in the wild, some coral polyps. Most transition onto prepared foods reasonably well, though a varied diet and a settling-in period are still needed.
- Carnivorous pickers (Copperband, Marginal, Longnose and Longnose Pair Butterflyfish) rely on extracting small invertebrates — worms, crustaceans, tube feet — from crevices and live rock using their elongated snouts. These species are frequently shy, slow and deliberate feeders in a new aquarium and are the group most likely to decline and starve if not carefully managed.
- Coral polyp feeders (Bluespot Butterflyfish, and many non-stocked Chaetodon such as chevron, melon or ornate butterflyfish) feed heavily or exclusively on live coral tissue in the wild. These species are notoriously difficult, often refusing prepared foods altogether, and are widely regarded by reef aquarists as essentially unsuitable for long-term captive life outside of expert facilities that can supply constant coral-based nutrition.
For every species, newly arrived fish respond best to a rotation of frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, clam or mussel on the half shell, finely chopped prawn, and specialist sponge or angelfish preparations, offered in small amounts two to three times a day while the fish settles. Soaking foods in a vitamin and appetite-stimulant supplement can help. Do not rely on dry pellet or flake food alone until a fish is feeding strongly and holding its body weight — for the carnivorous-picker and coral-polyp-feeding groups in particular, this can take weeks, and some individuals never make the switch. Always ask to see a butterflyfish feeding in-store before purchase — a fish that is not yet eating is a poor bet for a home aquarium.
Temperament and Tank Mate Compatibility
Most butterflyfish are peaceful to semi-aggressive and do best with calm tank mates that will not out-compete them at feeding time or harass them during the settling-in period — think peaceful tangs, rabbitfish, wrasse, gobies, blennies, anthias, chromis and cardinalfish. Some species, notably the Threadfin/Auriga Butterflyfish, are more assertive and territorial, particularly toward other butterflyfish of similar shape or colouration, and are best added last to an established community. Multiple butterflyfish can sometimes be housed together in larger systems, but this works best with bonded pairs or naturally shoaling species such as the Pyramid, Black Pyramid and Schooling Bannerfish rather than mixed singles of similar-looking Chaetodon.
Reef safety varies hugely across this family and should never be assumed. At the safer end, the Pyramid Butterflyfish, Black Pyramid Butterflyfish and Schooling Bannerfish are generally compatible with reef tanks because they feed mainly on plankton rather than sessile life, though individual fish can still surprise keepers by picking at small polyps or tubeworms when underfed. In the middle, species such as the Copperband, Marginal, Klein's, Dot Dash, Longnose and Longnose Pair Butterflyfish are best described as reef safe with caution — many will pick at feather dusters, small ornamental worms, LPS or soft coral polyps and clam mantles, especially once established and confident. At the risky end, the Bluespot and Threadfin/Auriga Butterflyfish are not reef safe and should be kept only in fish-only or FOWLR systems, since coral polyps, zoanthids and clam mantles are a normal part of their feeding behaviour.
Breeding Notes
Butterflyfish are characteristically monogamous, pair-forming fish that defend a shared territory on the reef, often for years at a time. Reproductively they are pelagic broadcast spawners: paired fish typically rise into the water column around dusk and release eggs and sperm together, producing large numbers of tiny, buoyant eggs that drift with the plankton. The resulting larvae pass through a highly specialised planktonic stage unique to this family, known as the tholichthys stage, in which bony armour plates develop over the head and, in some species, extend onto the body before eventually being resorbed as the fish settles into its adult form.
This larval stage is prolonged and depends on very specific wild planktonic prey — dedicated research culture work has shown that butterflyfish larvae reared on standard cultured foods (rotifers, artemia) generally die during metamorphosis, and only larvae fed predominantly on wild-caught plankton such as chaetognaths have been carried through to settlement. Combined with the difficulty of conditioning many adult butterflyfish — particularly the coral-polyp feeders — to spawn on a nutritionally complete captive diet, this makes butterflyfish breeding essentially unachievable in a home aquarium. Even in dedicated research and commercial aquaculture settings, successful captive-bred butterflyfish remain rare and species-limited; home aquarists should not expect to breed any species in this guide, and any spawning behaviour observed at home is very unlikely to result in viable offspring without specialist larval-rearing infrastructure.
Common Health Issues
Butterflyfish are notably susceptible to marine ich (Cryptocaryon irritans) and marine velvet (Amyloodinium ocellatum), both of which strike hardest at newly imported, stressed or poorly nourished fish. Because many species also carry specialised, sometimes species-specific monogenean gill and skin flukes from the wild, thorough quarantine before introduction to a display tank is strongly recommended for the whole family.
The single biggest cause of long-term loss in butterflyfish, however, is starvation rather than disease. Many species have fast metabolisms and, in the wild, spend the large majority of daylight hours continuously foraging; when a captive individual will not accept aquarium foods, it can waste away over weeks even while otherwise appearing outwardly healthy, developing a pinched or sunken belly profile as body condition declines. This risk is highest in the carnivorous-picker and coral-polyp-feeding species discussed in the Diet and Feeding section above. For this reason, always observe a butterflyfish actively feeding at the point of sale before committing to a purchase, quarantine new arrivals, and be prepared to offer a wide rotation of live and frozen foods during the critical first weeks in a new aquarium.
