Chlorophytum Care Guide (Chlorophytum bichetii)

Chlorophytum is a neat tuft of narrow, arching, cream-and-green striped leaves that looks wonderfully fresh at the water's edge, and we list it simply as Chlorophytum In Pot. It is a tempting plant on the bench, but it comes with an honest catch this guide will not gloss over. Although it is routinely sold for aquariums and looks the part, it is not a true aquatic plant. Grown fully submerged it cannot photosynthesise well enough to sustain itself, and it slowly declines and rots away over a matter of weeks to a few months. It belongs above the waterline instead: grown emersed (with its leaves up in the air) in a paludarium or terrarium, as a roots-in-water feature, or simply as a potted houseplant. That is where this guide will steer you.


1. Species Overview

The plant sold in the trade as Chlorophytum bichetii — commonly called Bichetii grass, and also known as false lily turf, Siam lily or wheat plant — sits in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). Here the naming needs a word of honesty, because it is genuinely muddled. Most botanical authorities treat Chlorophytum bichetii as a synonym of Chlorophytum laxum (R.Br.), a low, clumping, grassy species that is widespread across tropical Africa, Asia and, interestingly, parts of Australia; some horticultural registers, the Royal Horticultural Society among them, still list C. bichetii as a name in its own right. Either way it is the same plant, and it is the one we stock as Chlorophytum In Pot. It forms a low tuft, usually around 20–30 cm tall and spreading to perhaps 45–60 cm across, of flat to slightly folded, grass-like leaves that are green with a clean creamy-white band down the centre or along the margins. One important point of identity: this is not the familiar spider plant, Chlorophytum comosum, the hanging-basket favourite that throws out long arching runners tipped with baby plantlets. Bichetii is more compact and upright, and rather than those trailing runners it spreads by short rhizomes (the thick horizontal stems that many clumping plants grow from) and offsets. They are relatives, not the same plant.


2. Difficulty Level and Suitability

Here honesty matters more than salesmanship. Grown the right way — emersed in a paludarium (a planted setup that is part water and part land), a riparium or a terrarium, or as a houseplant — Chlorophytum is easy: a tough, forgiving foliage plant that asks only for warmth, indirect light and a moist but well-drained root run. As a permanent submersed aquarium plant, however, it is unsuitable, and the good sources say so plainly. Australian aquatic retailers describe it as "not a true aquatic species", fit only "for decorative, non-submerged use" and "best suited for emersed or marginal placement — above the waterline". Australian guides to false aquatics are blunter still: submerged, the plant "will start to rot", and as it breaks down it releases ammonia and dissolved organics that can foul the water, feed algae and stress your fish. No reliable figure is published for exactly how long a submerged specimen lasts — the documentation here is qualitative rather than precise — but the consensus is that it is a matter of weeks to a few months, not a lasting fixture. So choose Chlorophytum for a paludarium, terrarium or riparium, for a roots-in-water display, or as a houseplant; and if what you actually want is a permanent grassy plant under water, ask us instead for a true aquatic such as a Vallisneria, dwarf hairgrass or Cyperus helferi.


3. Water Parameters

Because this is not a submersed aquarium plant, the figures below are framed for how it is actually grown — emersed, or with its roots in water and its foliage in the air — rather than as invented tank targets. Steady conditions always beat conditions that lurch about, and these are working guides rather than hard limits; where the documentation for a non-aquatic runs thin, we have said so rather than fabricate a number.

The honest thing to grasp is that no number in this table is the limiting factor. The plant fails under water not because a parameter is wrong but because it cannot photosynthesise well enough while submerged to keep itself alive — that is biology, not bad husbandry, and perfect water will not change it.


4. Lighting Requirements

Our other guides rate light using PAR (photosynthetically active radiation, a measure of usable light reaching the plant), with roughly 30–50 counting as low, 50–80 as medium and 80-plus as high. That framework is for plants growing under water, though, and Chlorophytum grows above it, so what matters here is ordinary bright, indirect light rather than any aquarium PAR figure. Reputable horticultural sources place it in bright-to-moderate indirect light or partial-to-full shade: it holds its cream-and-green variegation best in good indirect light, tolerates surprisingly low and artificial light, and should be kept out of harsh direct sun, which scorches and bleaches the leaves. Sources differ a little on the ideal — some emphasise bright light for the best colour, others stress how shade-tolerant it is — and the sensible reading is that it is genuinely adaptable. Whenever you move it into brighter light, raise the intensity gradually over a week or two so it acclimatises rather than scorching.


5. CO₂ and Fertilisation

Plants grow by photosynthesis, using light to turn carbon dioxide and nutrients into new tissue, and this is exactly where Chlorophytum's preference for life above the water makes sense: grown emersed it draws on the abundant carbon dioxide in the air and grows happily, whereas submerged it cannot take up carbon efficiently enough to thrive. Injected CO₂ is therefore beside the point — it is not required, and it will not turn a submerged specimen into a true aquatic. Feed it instead as the foliage plant it is: a root feeder that wants an organic-rich, free-draining substrate and only light feeding, roughly once a season. Do not drown it in fertiliser, or in water — a moist, well-aerated root run does far more for it than any dosing regime.


6. Planting and Placement

Play to the plant's strengths and it is a delight. Its natural home in an aquatic display is above the waterline: planted into the land section or margin of a paludarium or riparium, tucked into a terrarium, or set so that only its roots reach into the water while the crown and leaves sit in the air — much the way people grow pothos or lucky bamboo as a roots-in-water feature. The single most important rule follows from that: keep the crown (the growing point where the leaves emerge) and the foliage above the water, with only the roots wet. Bury the crown, or submerge the whole plant, and it will rot. If you do want it briefly under water as a short-term green accent, treat it as a temporary display you will need to lift out again, not a fixture — expect it to decline over the following weeks. Give the clump room to sit at 20–30 cm tall and spread to around half a metre, and it makes a fresh, grassy backdrop at the water's edge; as a houseplant it is equally at home in a pot on a bright windowsill out of direct sun.


7. Growth Rate and Propagation

Grown emersed in warm, humid, reasonably bright conditions, Chlorophytum grows at a moderate-to-fast pace — sources range from "moderate" to "rapid", which is the usual spread for a plant whose speed depends heavily on warmth, light and humidity. Propagation is simple, and it does not rely on the plantlet-bearing runners of the true spider plant: lift a mature clump and divide it, separating the rhizome and its offsets into smaller pieces, each with roots and a few leaves, then pot them back up. Given good conditions it will also flower above water, carrying the small, starry white blooms typical of the genus. Submerged, none of this vigour applies — a drowned clump is winding down rather than establishing — so keep it emersed if you want it to grow and multiply.


8. Common Issues and Troubleshooting

By far the most common "problem" with Chlorophytum is also the most misunderstood: a submerged plant that yellows, goes limp, drops its leaves and slowly rots away over a few weeks to a couple of months. This is not a disease you can nurse back, nor a deficiency, nor a CO₂ swing — it is simply the plant failing because it is not a true aquatic, and no change of parameters, light or fertiliser reliably reverses it. Worse, as a submerged clump breaks down it releases ammonia and dissolved organics that can spike your water, feed algae and stress fish, so a rotting specimen is not a harmless one. The fix is practical rather than chemical: lift it into emersed conditions — roots in water or damp substrate, foliage in the air — and let it recover there. A second, subtler trap is overwatering even above the water: the plant dislikes a waterlogged crown and soggy soil, so keep the substrate moist but well-drained and never bury the growing point. Brown, crispy leaf tips usually point to air that is too dry or watering that is too erratic; steady moisture and a little more humidity generally settle them. In too little light the variegation fades and growth stretches; in harsh direct sun the leaves scorch — bright indirect light is the happy medium. Finally, remember at the point of sale that this looks like an aquarium plant but is not one: if you were after a permanent submerged grass, that is the moment to choose a true aquatic instead, and to dispose of any trimmings responsibly rather than releasing them into waterways.
