The Southern Marbled Gecko (Christinus marmoratus) is a small, agile nocturnal gecko native to southern Australia and one of the most widespread gecko species on the continent. Found from coastal bushland to suburban gardens, it is adaptable, undemanding, and one of the easier native gecko species to keep. Adults reach around 10 to 13 cm total length.
In Queensland a wildlife keeper's licence is required. See our Queensland Reptile Licence Guide before purchasing.
Enclosure
A relatively small enclosure is suitable for this species. A standard 45 cm terrarium or similar sized vivarium is appropriate for a single animal or a pair. Provide a burrowing substrate such as coconut husk or a soil and sand mix, along with rocks, cork bark, and timber pieces for hiding. A shallow water dish should be available at all times, but note that southern marbled geckos often prefer to lick water droplets from surfaces rather than drink from a bowl. Lightly mist one area of the enclosure daily or every couple of days to provide this.
Secure the lid: like all geckos, marbled geckos can scale glass and plastic surfaces and will escape through any gap.

Heating
Southern Marbled Geckos are from a temperate climate and do not need supplementary heat in most Queensland homes. Ambient room temperature of 18 to 26°C covers their requirements for much of the year. In cooler months if temperatures drop below about 15°C overnight, a low-wattage heat mat under one end of the enclosure on a thermostat can provide gentle background warmth.
If you do use supplementary heat, keep it subtle. Overheating is a greater risk than cooling for this species. Browse our heating and thermostat range.
Lighting and UVB
Strictly nocturnal. No UVB lighting is required. Ambient room lighting on a natural day/night cycle is sufficient. If you want to provide optional low-level UVB (2.0), this will not cause harm and may offer some benefit over the long term. Turn any lighting off at night.
Feeding
An insectivore with a particular affinity for small, fast-moving prey.
- Suitable prey: small crickets, small woodies, fruit flies, and small waxworms as an occasional treat. Keep prey small.
- Juveniles: feed daily.
- Adults: feed every 2 to 3 days.
Gut-load feeder insects for 24 to 48 hours before offering. Dust insects with calcium at most feedings and use a reptile multivitamin periodically. Provide a shallow water dish and lightly mist the enclosure every couple of days.

Handling and Temperament
Southern Marbled Geckos are quick, agile, and not well-suited to frequent handling. They are best kept as an observational species. When handling is necessary, keep it brief and low over a secure surface. Never grab the tail: like all geckos they can autotomise (drop) the tail if startled, and while it grows back it will not look the same. Handle infrequently and calmly.
