The rough-scaled python (Morelia carinata) is a rare and highly prized python from the Kimberley region of Western Australia, named for its distinctly keeled (rough) scales. A slender, semi-arboreal species reaching around 2m, it is best suited to experienced keepers.
Housing
Provide a tall, thermostatically controlled enclosure with sturdy climbing branches (they are semi-arboreal), plus secure hides and a water bowl. They appreciate higher humidity than most Australian pythons.
Heating
A warm end around 31-33C and a cool end of 24-26C, controlled by a thermostat with ceramic or infrared globes. Avoid overheating.
Lighting
UVB is not essential, though a low 5.0 UVB can be beneficial. Provide a normal day/night cycle.
Feeding
Feed appropriately sized rodents every 7-14 days according to age. Maintain slightly higher humidity for good sheds. Avoid handling for 24-48 hours after feeding.
Breeding
Rough-scaled pythons are bred by experienced keepers using a winter cooling period followed by a gradual warm-up. After mating the female lays a clutch of eggs, incubated at around 31-32C and hatching in roughly 55-65 days. Maintain slightly higher humidity throughout.
Overview
Rare, highly prized and reaching around 2m, the rough-scaled python is a slender, semi-arboreal species best suited to experienced keepers who can provide height, warmth and higher humidity. With good care they are long-lived. In Queensland a wildlife licence is required to keep a rough-scaled python.
