The wood gecko (Diplodactylus vittatus, also called the eastern stone gecko) is a small, robust, ground-dwelling gecko found across much of eastern Australia. They are hardy and undemanding, making a great beginner species.

Housing

As a terrestrial gecko they are easy to keep, but they can climb smooth surfaces so always use a secure lid. Around 20 x 20cm of floor space suits a pair; larger enclosures are unnecessary. Plastic tubs or fish tanks with lids work well. Use a sandy loam substrate 1-5cm deep with bark, upturned saucers or small rock piles for shelter. Keep one end lightly moist or provide a moist hide rather than misting the whole enclosure.

Heating & lighting

No supplementary lighting is required. If heating, use a thermostat-controlled heat mat or heat tape under part of the floor for a summer maximum of around 28-30C; cooler months may drop to 15-20C.

Feeding

Offer small insects - crickets, woodies, termites, flies and the occasional waxworm larva. Feed adults every 4-7 days in summer and 7-10 days in winter; juveniles every 2-4 days year-round. Keep food around 60% of head size and dust with calcium/vitamin every 2nd or 3rd feeding. Provide a shallow water dish.

Overview

Hardy, easy and long-lived (commonly 5-8 years), wood geckos are an excellent first terrestrial gecko. In Queensland a wildlife licence is required to keep them.
