Bioscape 320L/h Hanging Filter Replacement Bio Balls (1 Pack)

Give your filter's bacteria more room to work. This is the biological-stage replacement media for the Bioscape Tropic "Easy Clean" 80 Hang-On Filter (320 L/h, model BIS531) – sold as a one-pack of bio balls that host the colony of beneficial bacteria breaking down fish waste.

Key features
  • High surface area – the ridged ball shape gives beneficial bacteria far more area to colonise than a flat pad.
  • Long service life – biological media isn't a consumable in the same way as foam or carbon; it keeps working for months.
  • Drop-in fit – sized for the Easy Clean 80's cartridge slot, no cutting or trimming.
  • Final stage – sits last in the filter's three-stage cascade, after the mechanical and chemical media.

Fits Bioscape Tropic "Easy Clean" 80 Hang-On Filter, 320 L/h (BIS531), for aquariums of 38–75 L
Which filter stage do I need?

The Easy Clean 80 runs water through three stages in the one cartridge housing. Replace whichever stage is due, rather than the whole set:

Stage Media What it removes Typical service life
1 – Mechanical Filter foam (BIS531A) Suspended debris and floating particles Rinse in tank water at each service; replace once it's compacting or breaking apart – as a general guide, every four to six weeks
2 – Chemical Carbon cartridge (BIS531B) Odours, discolouration, dissolved organics Replace on a schedule, not a rinse – as a general guide, every three to four weeks, once the carbon is saturated
3 – Biological Bio balls (BIS531C) Ammonia and nitrite, via colonising bacteria Long life – rinse gently in tank water only, replace solely if physically broken
Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suitable for the Easy Clean 80 hang-on filter (320 L/h, BIS531) in freshwater or marine aquariums of 38–75 L. Not suitable for the 160 L/h or 450 L/h Easy Clean models, or Bioscape's other filter ranges – the cartridge housings differ in size.

Care and maintenance

Rinse gently in removed tank water when you service the filter – never under a tap, and never with soap or detergent, both of which will kill the bacteria colony living on the media. Only replace the balls if they're visibly cracked or crumbling; healthy bio media should be left in place as long as possible.

Common questions

How often do I need to replace bio balls?

Rarely. Unlike foam or carbon, bio media isn't meant to be changed on a schedule – leave it in place and just rinse it in tank water at each service, replacing only if it physically breaks down.

Can I run the filter without bio balls?

You can, but you'll lose most of the biological filtration capacity – the foam and carbon stages don't host bacteria anywhere near as effectively.

Will this fit my other Bioscape filter?

Only the Easy Clean 80 (320 L/h, BIS531). The 160 L/h and 450 L/h Easy Clean models use differently sized cartridges.

Do I need to replace all the bio balls at once?

No – to avoid a bacterial crash, it's safer to replace bio media gradually rather than all in one go, and only when it's genuinely deteriorated.
