The biological heart of the larger hang-on filters, sold as a straight replacement. This Bioscape Bio Screen fits the Hang On Power Filter Medium 550, Large 750 and X-Large 1000 (BIS500, BIS501, BIS502) — it does not fit the smaller Small 350, which takes its own screen size. It's the surface the filter's beneficial bacteria colonise to convert ammonia and nitrite into nitrate.

Key features
  • One screen, three filters — the Medium, Large and X-Large housings share the same screen size, so one part number covers all three.
  • High surface area — sized for the larger housings, giving more room for nitrifying bacteria than the Small screen.
  • Single screen — sold individually so you can restock without buying a full media set.

Suitable for, and not suitable for
  • Suitable for: the Bioscape Hang On Power Filter Medium 550, Large 750 and X-Large 1000.
  • Not suitable for: the Small 350 — that model uses a smaller, dedicated screen.
Care and maintenance

Rinse the screen in water taken from your own tank during a water change, rather than tap water, to avoid killing the bacteria colony. When it's physically worn out and due for replacement, run the old and new screens together for around two weeks so bacteria have time to establish on the new one before the old one is retired.

Warranty and delivery

Covered against manufacturing defects on arrival, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Ships as a standard parcel item.

Common questions

Does this fit my Small 350 filter?

No. The Small 350 uses a smaller, dedicated bio screen — this size only fits the Medium 550, Large 750 and X-Large 1000.

How do I know when to replace it?

Bioscape doesn't publish a fixed interval. Replace it once it's visibly breaking down or crumbling rather than to a calendar, and rinse rather than replace it at every water change.

Do I need to cycle a new screen before using it?

Run it alongside your old screen for about two weeks first, so the bacteria colony transfers across before you remove the old one.
