Bioscape Shrimp Wood XLarge 40 - 50cm 6 Pieces
Six extra-large branches anchor a scape as one dominant feature, not a background detail. Bioscape Shrimp Wood XLarge is a six-piece box of natural branch driftwood, each piece 40–50 cm long – the longest grade in the range, sized for a larger tank where a handful of substantial branches should carry the whole layout.
Key features
- Six pieces, 40–50 cm each – the longest grade Bioscape sells this wood in, built to be the centrepiece rather than filler.
- No two pieces alike – natural driftwood varies in colour, taper and branching, and at this length the individual character of each piece matters more.
- Grows the biofilm shrimp graze on – large surface area per branch means a substantial, standing biofilm feeding ground once established.
- Freshwater aquascaping wood – sized and sold for standard to larger planted tanks; not rated by Nick's for marine or reef use.
- Doubles as terrarium branch wood – once fully cured and dried, these longer branches suit larger bioactive terrarium and paludarium builds.

Which size do I need?
| Size | Piece length | Pieces per box | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medium | 20–30 cm | 20 | Dense branching across several nano tanks, or one heavily wooded medium tank |
| Large | 30–40 cm | 10 | A single feature scape in a standard to medium tank |
| XLarge | 40–50 cm | 6 | A dominant centrepiece in a larger tank |
XLarge is the box to reach for when the tank is big enough that a Large branch would look undersized. Six pieces is fewer to place, but at 40–50 cm each, one or two of them can carry an entire aquascape's structure on their own.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for larger freshwater planted and shrimp tanks needing one or two dominant hardscape branches, and bigger bioactive terrarium or paludarium builds. Not suitable for nano tanks – at 40–50 cm, individual pieces can be too long to sit comfortably in a small footprint; check the Medium or Large grade instead. Not suitable for reef or marine tanks – this piece is sold and rated for freshwater only.
Care and maintenance
Like all natural driftwood, these pieces float until they waterlog, and at this size that can take longer than the smaller grades. Submerge each piece fully in a container large enough to take a 40–50 cm branch, changing the water every few days until it sinks on its own and stops tinting it. Boiling speeds up waterlogging and clears surface organic matter first, though you'll need a container long enough or to boil in sections. Weigh floaters down temporarily with rock while they're still soaking.
Warranty and delivery
Natural material, sold as pictured but not to an exact shape – Bioscape doesn't warrant colour, taper or grain, since no two pieces are alike, but you're covered against a mis-described or transit-damaged order under Australian Consumer Law. Longer branches may ship in an oversized parcel; check freight at checkout.
Common questions
Will these pieces fit a standard-size tank?
They can, but at 40–50 cm they're built for a larger footprint – measure your tank's length before ordering, since a single piece can span most of a smaller aquarium.
How long does soaking take at this size?
Longer than the Medium or Large grades, since there's more wood to waterlog. Expect the thickest pieces to take several weeks without boiling.
Will it discolour my water?
Yes, at first, and more noticeably given the larger surface area – tannins tint the water tea-brown early on and fade as the wood cures.
Can I cut a piece down to size?
Yes, natural branch wood can be trimmed with a hand saw if a piece is longer than your tank needs – cut ends will still leach tannins the same as the rest of the branch.
Is it suitable for a paludarium?
Yes, once fully cured and dried, these longer branches work well as the emergent structure in a paludarium or bioactive terrarium build.
Goes well with
- Seachem Flourish Glue – ties moss or epiphytes onto the branches while they establish.
- Seachem Prime – dechlorinates the water used for a soak this size.
- Seachem Algae Scraper – keeps the glass clear while tannins settle in the first weeks.
- Fluval Pro-Vac Gravel Cleaner – clears bark fragments and debris shed by a large branch early on.
