The starter kit puts the tank, filtration and first-water essentials in one box. It is not sold as a complete system — a lid, light and heater are separate purchases.

If you're keeping tropical fish, budget for a heater — this kit doesn't include one on any size, and an uncovered, unheated tank will simply track room temperature.

The 13 litre suits a single betta or a very small nano setup. The 22 litre gives a small community of tetras or similar schooling fish room to move. The 38 litre is the better starting point if you want to stock more than a handful of small fish, since it dilutes waste over a larger volume and forgives beginner mistakes more easily.

• Suitable for: a first freshwater aquarium — betta, nano fish, or a small community once the tank has cycled.
• Not suitable for: reptiles, amphibians or marine/reef setups — this is a freshwater kit. It's also not a complete system out of the box; budget for a heater if you're keeping tropical fish, and a light if you want to properly view the tank or grow plants.

Run the tank fishless for around two weeks before adding fish, so the filter has time to establish the bacteria that process ammonia. Rinse — don't replace — filter media at water changes, since a full rinse in tap water kills the bacteria you've just grown.

Does this kit include a light?

No. None of the three sizes include a light. Add one separately if you want to properly view the tank or keep live plants.

Does it include a heater?

No. If you're keeping tropical fish rather than coldwater species, you'll need to add a heater sized to the litre count.

Is there a glass lid included?

No. A matching glass cover is sold separately for the 22 litre and 38 litre sizes.

How long before I can add fish?

Run it fishless for about two weeks first so the filter can establish itself — adding fish to an uncycled tank is the most common reason a first tank struggles.
