Bioscape Milk Conch Shell 15cm

A natural conch shell that doubles as a hideaway. Bioscape's Milk Conch Shell is a 15 cm natural sea shell used as aquarium decor and as a hideaway for fish and other tank inhabitants. As a natural shell rather than a moulded ornament, size, shape and surface texture vary piece to piece.

Key features
  • Natural sea shell – a genuine milk conch shell, not a resin cast, so texture and colour are the real thing.
  • Doubles as a hideaway – the shell's cavity gives fish and small bottom-dwellers somewhere to retreat.
  • 15 cm – a mid-size decor piece that reads clearly in the tank without dominating it.
  • Every piece unique – natural shells vary in exact shape, colour and surface wear.

15 cm Natural conch shell (calcium carbonate) Aquarium decor and fish hideaway
Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suitable for community, cichlid and marine display tanks as decor or a hide. Not recommended for reef tanks running a calcium reactor or acid-dosing, where inputs are being precisely controlled – as a calcium carbonate shell, it will slowly dissolve and add to that load. Also not recommended for very soft, acidic blackwater setups, for the same reason.

Care and maintenance

Rinse before adding to the tank. Being calcium carbonate, it will very slowly erode in acidic water – check it occasionally in soft or blackwater setups and remove it if it's visibly thinning.

Warranty and delivery

As a natural product, variation in individual shell shape and colour is expected and is not a fault. Covered under your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Ships by standard parcel post.

Common questions

Will this shell affect my water hardness?

Yes, slowly – it's natural calcium carbonate, so in soft or acidic water it will gradually dissolve and raise hardness a little. In typical community tank water this effect is minor.

Is it reef safe?

It's chemically inert to marine life and safe to add to a reef tank, but avoid it if you're precisely dosing calcium and alkalinity, since the shell itself is a slow calcium source.

Will fish actually use it as a hide?

Many will – the cavity suits small to mid-size fish and bottom-dwellers looking for a retreat, though use depends on the species and the shell's opening size relative to the fish.

Does every shell look the same?

No – this is a natural shell rather than a cast ornament, so shape, colour and surface texture vary piece to piece.
