Bioscape Amber/Gold Spider Roots Medium 20 - 30cm
Spider roots get their name from the thin, branching tendrils spreading out from a central root ball.
Bioscape Amber/Gold Spider Roots Medium is a single piece of natural branching driftwood, 20 to 30 cm across, in the warm amber-to-gold tones this line is named for. It's sold as one piece and, like all natural wood, no two pieces are exactly alike – shape, branching and colour vary.
Key features
- Branching, spider-like form – multiple thin tendrils radiating from a central root, the structure aquascapers use to build layered, tree-like hardscapes.
- Amber/gold colouring – lighter and warmer than typical dark driftwood, distinct from Bioscape's standard driftwood range.
- 20-30 cm, Medium – sits above the 15-20 cm Small in Bioscape's Amber/Gold Spider Roots line.
- Releases tannins – expect amber tinting in the first weeks, more noticeable in a new tank than an established, well-filtered one.

Will it sink, and how do I prepare it?
Spider root pieces are thinner and less dense than chunkier driftwood types, and commonly float for longer – often several weeks – before they waterlog enough to sink on their own. Submerge the piece fully in a bucket or tub, weighted down with a clean rock or wedged under something heavy, until it stops trying to surface. Rinse off any loose bark or debris before it goes in.
Effect on your water
Like all driftwood, this piece leaches tannins, tinting the water amber and nudging pH down slightly – welcomed in soft-water and blackwater-style setups, and part of the aquascaping look. If you would rather keep the water clear, run activated carbon such as Bioscape Premium Carbon Pouches until the tint settles.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for:
- Freshwater aquascapes wanting a lighter-toned branching centrepiece
- Terrarium and vivarium builds, where the same branching form works as a climbing or basking structure
- Mounting moss, ferns and epiphytic plants along the tendrils
Not suitable for:
- Marine or reef tanks – this is a freshwater and terrestrial decor product
- Buyers who need a guaranteed exact shape – natural pieces vary, and the photo is representative only
Goes well with
- Bioscape Amber/Gold Spider Roots Small 15-20cm – pair sizes to build a layered, multi-piece hardscape.
- Bioscape Premium Carbon Pouches – for controlling tannin staining once the wood is in the tank.
- Seachem Flourish Glue – for anchoring moss and epiphytic plants to the branches.
- Bioscape Amazon Wood M 45-60cm – a heavier driftwood type to anchor a layout the spider roots branch out from.

Common questions
Will it float when I first add it?
Very likely, and probably for longer than denser driftwood types – spider root pieces are thin and often take several weeks to waterlog. Soak and weigh it down in a separate container until it sinks on its own.
Is this suitable for a terrarium rather than an aquarium?
Yes. Spider root's branching form is used across both aquascaping and terrarium or vivarium builds, as a climbing structure or a mounting point for epiphytic plants and moss.
Will it change my water colour?
Yes, expect amber tannin staining in the first weeks, particularly in a new or lightly filtered tank. It fades over time, or faster with activated carbon.
What's the difference between this and the Small size?
Only the size – 20-30 cm here against 15-20 cm for the Small. Both are the same branching form and amber/gold colouring, and can be combined in one layout.
Is the exact shape shown in the photo what I'll receive?
No. This is a natural product and every piece is different – the photo shows the wood type and colouring, not the individual piece you'll be sent.
