Exo Terra Ceramic Heat Emitter

Heat with no light, so it can run day and night. The Exo Terra Ceramic Heat Emitter is a solid ceramic heating element that gives off long wave infrared heat (radiant heat you feel rather than see) and no visible light at all. Because it emits no light, Exo Terra says it does not disturb your animal's normal day and night cycle. It warms the animal directly and also raises the air temperature in the enclosure. Available in 60, 100, 150 and 250 W.

Key features
  • No light output, so it can be used as a 24 hour heat source without upsetting the day and night cycle.
  • Long wave infrared heat that warms the animal and raises the overall air temperature of the terrarium.
  • Solid ceramic element that Exo Terra rates as suitable for humid environments.
Specifications
  • Wattages: 60 W, 100 W, 150 W and 250 W
  • Type: screw-in ceramic heat emitter, heat only, no light and no UVB
  • Fixture: Exo Terra specifies its Wire Light fixture, a porcelain (ceramic) socket with a wire guard. Check that the fixture is rated for the wattage you choose.
Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suitable for reptiles and amphibians that need background warmth at night or around the clock, including in humid setups. Not suitable as a basking light or a light source, because it gives off no light. It also produces no UVB (ultraviolet B, the part of sunlight reptiles use to make vitamin D3, which they need to absorb calcium), so species that need UVB still need a separate UVB lamp.

Safety
  • Use it only in a porcelain socket rated for the wattage. Exo Terra specifies its Wire Light fixture for this heater.
  • Run it on a thermostat so the enclosure cannot overheat. Exo Terra lists ceramic heaters among the heat sources its own thermostats control.
  • Mount it where the animal cannot touch it, or behind a guard. The surface gets hot enough to burn, and there is no glow to warn you it is on.
  • Let it cool before handling, keep it clear of decor and anything that can burn, and check the temperature at the animal's level with a thermometer.
