A realistic primate skull hide that gives reptiles, amphibians and fish somewhere secure to retreat, rest and shed. Exo Terra's Primate Skull is styled after a real cranium, with several entry points so animals can move through and settle inside it rather than just crouch behind it. Exo Terra rates it for desert, rainforest and aquatic setups, so it works equally well buried into an arid layout, tucked into a rainforest terrarium, or submerged as an aquarium ornament.

Key features
  • Multiple entrances — animals can move through the skull rather than being boxed into one opening, so it doesn't become a dead end.
  • Cross-habitat use — rated by Exo Terra for desert, rainforest and aquatic setups, so it suits terrariums and aquariums alike.
  • Shelter and thermoregulation — a hide gives reptiles and amphibians a shaded, slightly more humid spot to retreat to, supporting normal thermoregulation and reducing stress from feeling exposed.
  • Moss-ready interior — pack the cavity with damp forest moss or sphagnum moss and it doubles as an egg-laying site for species that lay in enclosed, humid spaces.
  • Shedding aid — the textured interior gives snakes and lizards something to catch loose skin against during a shed.

Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suited to reptile, amphibian and fish enclosures set up as desert, rainforest, paludarium or aquarium displays — anywhere a rigid, cave-like hide is useful. It's a hide and egg-laying chamber, not a load-bearing climbing feature or basking platform.

Goes well with

Works well alongside a substrate suited to the setup — desert sand for arid tanks, a forest or plantation soil for humid ones — plus a shallow water dish, and forest or sphagnum moss if you're using the skull as a moist hide or egg-laying chamber.

Warranty and delivery

Covered by the manufacturer's standard warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. Ships as a standard parcel item.

Common questions

Is the Primate Skull safe to use in an aquarium as well as a terrarium?

Yes — Exo Terra rates this hide for aquatic setups as well as desert and rainforest terrariums.

What's the difference between the Small and Large sizes?

Both are the same primate skull design; Large is scaled up for bigger enclosures and larger-bodied animals, and Small suits smaller tanks and species.

Can I use it as an egg-laying site?

Yes — pack the internal cavity with damp forest moss or sphagnum moss to create a humid, enclosed space suitable for species that lay eggs in cover.

Will it affect my water chemistry if I use it in an aquarium?

Exo Terra markets this piece as suitable for aquarium use. As with any new aquarium decoration, give it a rinse before adding it to an established tank.
