Exo Terra T5 High Performance UVB Fixture

The reflector and ballast, built to get the most out of whichever UVB tube you fit. The Exo Terra T5 Terrarium Top is a high-performance fixture for T5 HO and VHO fluorescent tubes, built around a highly polished reflector that Exo Terra states increases usable lamp output by 2.5 times, paired with an electronic ballast that runs flicker-free and protects against over-voltage, over-current, end-of-lamp-life and overheating. It's sold as the fixture only – the T5 tube itself, UVB or otherwise, is a separate purchase.

Key features
  • 2.5x reflector boost – a highly polished aluminium reflector that Exo Terra states more than doubles the usable output of the tube fitted, versus running the same tube without a reflector.
  • Flicker-free electronic ballast – with protection against over-voltage, over-current, end-of-lamp-life and overheating.
  • Four fixture lengths – 35 cm (8 W) through to 120 cm (54 W), so the fixture can be matched to tube wattage and enclosure length.
  • Linkable – up to 10 units can be joined with the optional interconnection cable and run from a single timer.
  • Mount two ways – sits directly on top of mesh, or mounts inside the enclosure using the optional Mounting Clips (PT4259, sold separately).
  • Grounded plug – for safety on a mains-powered fixture used around humidity.
Specifications – all sizes
Model Length Wattage SKU
PT4255 35 cm (14 in) 8 W RP405
PT4256 60 cm (24 in) 24 W RP406
PT4257 90 cm (35 in) 39 W RP407
PT4258 120 cm (47 in) 54 W RP408

The 35 cm / 8 W fixture ships with a 200 cm power cable and a 60 cm interconnection cable. Exo Terra's published specifications don't state the cable lengths for the 24 W, 39 W and 54 W fixtures.

What's included / what you'll still need

Included: the fixture body, reflector, electronic ballast, mains power cable and one interconnection cable.

Not included: the T5 tube itself. This fixture is sold as a housing and ballast only – you'll need to choose and buy a T5 HO or VHO tube separately in the matching wattage.

Which UVB output do I need?

The fixture accepts any T5 linear fluorescent tube of the matching wattage, but Exo Terra's own Reptile UVB VHO T5 tubes come in three output levels, built around the Ferguson Zone system that groups reptile species by their natural sun exposure:

Tube UVB output Ferguson Zone Typical species grouping
UVB 100 3% Zone 1 Shade-dwelling and crepuscular species with low UVB needs
UVB 200 7% Zone 2 Partial-sun, semi-basking species
UVB 300 14% Zones 3–4 Full-sun, heavy-basking species

Because this fixture is sold without a tube, we can't publish a single UV-Index-by-distance figure for it – that figure depends entirely on which of the three tube outputs you fit, and Exo Terra publishes UVI-by-distance data against the individual tube, not the empty fixture. Once you've chosen a tube, check that product's own listing for the distance chart, and remember the reflector here is already accounted for in Exo Terra's own UVI ratings for tubes designed for this fixture.

Performance

The main variable this fixture controls is how much of the tube's output reaches the animal: the polished reflector redirects light that would otherwise escape upward or sideways, which Exo Terra states results in roughly 2.5 times the usable output compared with the bare tube. Actual UVB and light reaching the basking spot still depends on the tube fitted, the mesh (if the fixture sits on top of one), and mounting distance.

Suitable for – and not suitable for

Suited to any enclosure needing a linear T5 UVB or standard fluorescent light source, including planted vivariums where a non-UVB grow tube is fitted instead. Not a complete lighting solution on its own – you need to select and fit a tube before it does anything.

Safety
  • Mains-powered – keep the ballast and cable connections clear of standing water and direct spray.
  • The electronic ballast includes over-voltage, over-current, end-of-lamp-life and overheating protection, but the fixture should still be checked periodically for damaged cabling.
  • If mounting inside the enclosure with the optional Mounting Clips, keep the fixture at the mounting distance recommended for whichever tube you fit – that distance is published against the tube, not this fixture.
Goes well with
  • An Exo Terra Reptile UVB VHO T5 tube in the wattage matching this fixture, in whichever output level (100/200/300) suits your species.
  • Exo Terra T5 Light Unit Mounting Clips (PT4259), for mounting inside the enclosure rather than on top of the mesh.
  • An Exo Terra T5 Light Unit Interconnection Cable, if running more than one fixture off a single timer.
Warranty and delivery

Common questions

Does this fixture come with a UVB tube?

No – it's sold as the fixture, reflector and ballast only. You choose and buy the T5 tube separately in the matching wattage.

What does the reflector actually do?

It redirects light that would otherwise be lost upward or sideways back down toward the enclosure, which Exo Terra states increases usable output by around 2.5 times compared with a bare tube.

Can I run more than one fixture off one timer?

Yes – up to 10 Exo Terra T5 Terrarium Top fixtures can be linked with the optional interconnection cable and controlled from a single timer.

Can I mount it inside the enclosure instead of on top of the mesh?

Yes, using the optional Mounting Clips (PT4259, sold separately). Mounted on top of mesh is the simpler option and avoids a mesh-penalty on UVB output.
