Exo Terra Turtle Gravel 8-10mm (4.5kg bag)

Smooth river pebbles that won't scratch a turtle's plastron. Exo Terra Turtle Gravel 8-10mm is a 4.5 kg bag of natural river pebbles, rounded over time in fast-moving water, sized for aquatic and semi-aquatic turtles with a shell up to around 10 cm.

Key features
  • Naturally rounded, 8-10 mm pebbles – smooth surfaces reduce the risk of scrapes for turtles foraging or resting on the substrate.
  • Sized to help prevent accidental ingestion in turtles up to roughly 10 cm shell diameter – larger turtles should move up to a coarser pebble.
  • Natural colour variation – each bag carries a realistic mix of river-stone tones rather than one flat colour.
  • Reusable – soak, disinfect and rinse rather than replace at every clean.
  • 4.5 kg bag – suits a single small to medium aquatic setup.

Exo Terra doesn't publish a coverage guide (the depth this pack achieves over a given tank footprint), so we're not going to estimate one. If you need an exact quantity for a specific tank, weigh out a test layer before committing to multiple bags.

Which size do I need?

This 8-10 mm pebble suits turtles with a shell up to about 10 cm. For bigger turtles, we also stock Exo Terra Turtle Gravel 10-20mm, a coarser pebble sized to further reduce ingestion risk in larger animals.

Suitable for – and not suitable for

Suited to aquatic and semi-aquatic turtles, and to paludariums and aqua-terrariums housing frogs, newts, salamanders and other semi-aquatic species. Not intended as the sole substrate for turtles with a shell over roughly 10 cm – step up to the 10-20mm size instead. Exo Terra doesn't state an effect on pH or water hardness for this product, so we're not claiming it's inert – test your own water after adding it if that matters for your setup.

Care and maintenance

Reusable rather than disposable. To clean: soak and disinfect in a bucket of water for 15 minutes, then rinse until the water runs clear and no visible particles remain, before returning it to the tank.

Common questions

Will this gravel affect my water's pH or hardness?

Exo Terra doesn't publish a figure either way for this product, so we won't claim it's inert. Test your water after adding it if pH stability matters for your setup.

Can I reuse this gravel instead of buying a new bag?

Yes – soak and disinfect it in a bucket of water for 15 minutes, then rinse until the water runs clear.

Is this gravel safe if my turtle swallows a piece?

The 8-10 mm size is sized to help prevent accidental ingestion in turtles up to about 10 cm shell diameter. For larger turtles, choose the coarser 10-20mm size instead.

How much do I need for my tank?

Exo Terra doesn't publish a coverage guide for this pack, so we can't give an exact figure. A 4.5 kg bag suits a small to medium single setup – weigh out a test layer if you need precision for a specific tank.
