Fluval C3 Hang On Filter Ammonia Remover

Strips ammonia from the water before it can stress or harm freshwater fish. This is the genuine Fluval Ammonia Remover (item 14015) for the C3 Power Filter — a three-pack of natural ion-exchange media that targets ammonia specifically, rather than the general odour and discolouration carbon handles.

Key features
  • Natural ion-exchange media — binds ammonia directly, rather than adsorbing organics generally the way carbon does.
  • Useful during cycling — buys a margin of safety in a new tank before the biological filter is established.
  • Useful after tap water treatment — helps mop up ammonia released when chloramine is broken down by a dechlorinator.
  • Three cartridges per pack — genuine Fluval item 14015, sized for the C3 chemical media chamber.

Will it fit my filter?

Sized specifically for the Fluval C3 Power Filter's chemical media chamber. It does not fit the C2 or C4 — use their respective ammonia remover cartridges instead. It is a different product to Fluval's C3 Zeo-Carb (item 14018), which blends this ammonia-removing resin with carbon in one cartridge.

Suitable for, and not suitable for
  • Suitable for freshwater tanks — new setups being cycled, tanks recovering from a chloramine dose, or heavily stocked tanks running high ammonia readings.
  • Not suitable for saltwater. The resin works by exchanging ions with ammonia, and the high mineral content of saltwater outcompetes it, so it won't remove ammonia in a marine tank.
Care and maintenance

Replace approximately once a month during regular use — Fluval's own guidance is that the resin's effectiveness fades gradually until it stops working, rather than failing all at once, so it's worth replacing on a schedule rather than waiting for a problem to show up on a test kit.

Goes well with
  • Fluval C3 Activated Carbon (item 14012) — general odour and discolouration control alongside targeted ammonia removal.
  • Fluval C3 Foam Pad (item 14006) — the mechanical stage this media sits behind.
  • Fluval C3 Bio-Screen (item 14021) — the biological stage that takes over longer-term ammonia control as the tank matures.
Warranty and delivery

Covered by Fluval's standard replacement-media warranty against manufacturing defects, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Ships as a standard parcel.

Common questions

Can I use this in a saltwater tank?

No. It's freshwater only — the ion-exchange resin doesn't work in the mineral-rich environment of saltwater.

How often do I need to replace it?

Roughly once a month with continuous use.

Do I need this if my tank is already cycled?

Not usually. It's most useful during cycling, after a large water change with chloramine-treated tap water, or as backup in a heavily stocked tank — an established biological filter normally handles ammonia on its own.

Will this fit my C2 or C4 filter?

No — each C-series size uses its own ammonia remover cartridge.
