Fluval CHI Aquarium Filter Pad Replacement
Fresh mechanical filtration keeps a Fluval CHI's water clear. This is the genuine filter pad – the fine mechanical stage of the CHI's concealed, two-part filter cube – sized for the Fluval CHI and Fluval CHI II 5 US gallon (19 L) aquarium kit, model 10505.
Key features
- Genuine Fluval part A1420 – the fine mechanical filter pad used in the CHI's rotating top filter cube.
- Traps fine debris and discolouration before it clouds the water column.
- Works alongside the foam pad – together they form the CHI's dual-stage mechanical filter (foam pad sold separately).
- No tools needed – lift the rotating top cube and drop the new pad straight in.

Will it fit my filter?
Check your CHI is the 5 US gallon (19 L) model 10505 – the compact bowl-style kit with a rotating top filter cube, sold as both the original Fluval CHI and the later Fluval CHI II. This pad is sized for that cube's fine filtration stage. We haven't been able to confirm this pad also fits the larger 25 L (6.6 US gal) Fluval CHI II, model 10508 – check your filter cube size before ordering if you have that model, or get in touch and we'll help confirm.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for routine mechanical filter media changes on the 5 US gallon (19 L) CHI or CHI II. This listing is the filter pad only – it isn't a substitute for the coarser foam pad, which handles a different stage of filtration and is sold separately.
Care and maintenance
Fluval's care guide calls for the filter pad to be replaced every 2–4 weeks, sooner in a heavily stocked tank, to keep mechanical filtration effective and stop trapped debris breaking down and clouding the water again.
Common questions
How often should I replace the Fluval CHI filter pad?
Every 2–4 weeks under normal stocking, per Fluval's care guide – sooner if the tank is heavily stocked or the pad looks visibly clogged.
Do I need to replace the foam pad at the same time?
No. The foam pad has a longer service life, around 2–3 months, and is sold separately, so the two can be replaced on their own schedules.
Will this fit the larger 25 L Fluval CHI II?
This listing is sized for the 5 US gallon (19 L) CHI and CHI II, model 10505. We haven't confirmed fitment on the larger 25 L (6.6 US gal) model 10508 – check your filter cube against the pad before ordering.
