Fluval Clearmax Phosphate Resin Large 3 x100gm Pouches

Three 100 g resin pouches that pull phosphate, nitrite and nitrate out of your aquarium water. Fluval Clearmax is a science-grade adsorption resin designed to sit in your canister filter's media basket, cutting the nutrients that feed algae and clouding the water. It's the same formula previously sold as Green X, rebranded in 2009.

Key features
  • Adsorbs phosphate, nitrite and nitrate — reduces the nutrients that drive algae blooms and cloudy water.
  • Three 100 g pouches — treats a total of 300 litres of aquarium water.
  • Cost per litre — at the current price, this pack works out to around $0.10 per litre of water treated.
  • Fits all canister filters — drops straight into the media basket alongside your existing mechanical and biological stages.
  • Freshwater and saltwater use — in marine tanks it removes phosphate but does not remove nitrate.

Dosage and directions

Place one pouch in your canister filter's media basket per 100 litres of tank water, positioned after mechanical filtration so debris doesn't clog the resin. Rinse the pouch under tap water before use to clear dust. Fluval doesn't publish a fixed replacement interval for Clearmax on its current product page — replace the pouch once phosphate or nitrate readings start climbing again on your test kit.

Suitable for, and not suitable for
  • Suitable for freshwater and saltwater tanks running high nutrient loads, algae problems, or cloudy water linked to phosphate or nitrate.
  • Not suitable for reef tanks relying on measurable nitrate for coral colour, or as a substitute for regular water changes and stocking management.
Warranty and delivery

Covered by Fluval's standard consumer warranty against manufacturing defects, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Ships standard parcel delivery.

Common questions

How long does one pouch last?

Each pouch treats roughly 100 litres. Fluval doesn't publish a fixed lifespan, so watch your phosphate and nitrate test results and replace it once the readings start rising again.

Can I use it in a reef tank?

Yes for phosphate control, but it doesn't strip nitrate from saltwater the way it does in freshwater, and it isn't a substitute for regular water testing.

Where does it go in my filter?

In the media basket, after the mechanical filter stage, so debris doesn't clog the resin before it can adsorb nutrients.

Is this the same as Green X?

Yes — Fluval rebranded Green X as Clearmax in May 2009. The formula is unchanged.
