Fluval Nano Aquarium filter

A compact internal filter that runs quiet enough for a desk tank and still turns the water over several times an hour. The Fluval Nano Aquarium Filter (Fluval A455) is a submersible internal filter rated for aquariums up to 55 L (15 US gal), combining mechanical and biological filtration in one small box-style unit that mounts inside the tank on suction cups.

Key features
  • 307 L/h rated flow – Fluval's stated output at zero head, enough to turn a 55 L tank over more than five times an hour at full rate.
  • Adjustable spray bar outlet – dial the surface agitation up for extra oxygen exchange, or down for bettas and other still-water-preferring fish.
  • Foam media, not disposable cartridges – a fine foam pad plus Bio-Foam biological media, both rinseable and reusable.
  • 6.8 W running cost – low enough to run continuously without a noticeable impact on your power bill.
  • Three suction cups included – mounts inside the tank without extra hardware.

Performance

Fluval publishes the 307 L/h figure at zero head with clean, empty media – the same convention used across its internal filter range. Against a 55 L tank that's a theoretical turnover of just over 5.5 times per hour at full rate. Actual flow will be lower once the foam pad is carrying a normal bioload, as with any mechanical filter between cleans; Fluval doesn't publish a loaded-flow figure for this model, so treat 307 L/h as the ceiling rather than the running average.

Will it fit my tank?

Rated to 55 L (15 US gal), which covers most nano and small community setups. For anything larger, or for a heavily stocked 55 L tank, step up to a hang-on-back or canister filter rather than running this at its limit – an internal filter this size is doing all the work with a single small pad, and stocking density matters more than raw litres.

What's included
  • 1 x Fluval Nano filter unit
  • 1 x fine foam filter pad (fitted)
  • 1 x Bio-Foam biological media (fitted)
  • 3 x suction cups
Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suitable for nano and small freshwater or marine aquariums up to 55 L, betta bowls and small planted tanks, and as a secondary filter in a larger, lightly stocked tank. Not suitable as the sole filter on a heavily stocked tank near or above the 55 L mark, and not intended for ponds or outdoor use.

Care and maintenance

Rinse the foam pad in used tank water (not tap water) every 2–4 weeks to avoid killing off the biological bacteria colonising it. Replace the fine foam pad once it no longer springs back after squeezing, and refresh the Bio-Foam roughly every 6 months. A separate carbon cartridge (Fluval A458) can be added to the media compartment for chemical filtration when needed.

Goes well with
  • Fluval Nano Filter Carbon Cartridge (A458) – adds chemical filtration for odour and discolouration removal.
  • Fluval Nano Filter Impeller (A-15002) – genuine spare impeller for this filter.
Warranty and delivery

Common questions

Is 307 L/h enough for a 55 L tank?

Yes for a normally stocked community tank – that's over five times the tank volume turned over per hour at full rate. For a heavily planted or heavily stocked tank near the upper size limit, expect to clean the pad more often to keep flow up.

Can I use this in a marine or reef tank?

Yes, the filter itself is safe for fresh and marine water. In a reef tank it works best as supplementary mechanical filtration alongside a protein skimmer, rather than as the only filtration on the system.

How do I slow the flow down for a betta?

The spray bar outlet is adjustable – dial it down to reduce surface turbulence, or angle it against the glass to diffuse the current further.

Does it come with a carbon cartridge?

No. The filter ships with the foam pad and Bio-Foam fitted; the carbon cartridge (A458) is sold separately for when chemical filtration is needed.
