Twist 25w UV
A 25 watt in-line UV steriliser where the flow rate you set decides what it controls. The Aqua Ultraviolet Twist 25 watt is a UV steriliser (a unit that passes water past an ultraviolet lamp to kill algae and free floating micro-organisms) for aquariums and ponds. Aqua Ultraviolet rates it by UV dose: the slower the water moves past the lamp, the higher the dose. Faster flow suits algae control on a reef tank, while slower flow gives the higher dose Aqua Ultraviolet recommends for controlling fish disease in marine fish tanks.
Key features
- One 25 watt UV lamp, rated by Aqua Ultraviolet for 14 months of continuous use.
- Five published dose settings, from 400 to 1,200 US gallons per hour (about 1,514 to 4,542 litres per hour).
- EZ Twist Top (the screw-off end fitting) for removing the quartz sleeve by hand when cleaning.
- Mounts horizontally or vertically; Aqua Ultraviolet prefers horizontal, as it keeps the chamber flooded.
Specifications
- Lamp: 1 x 25 watt
- Size: 20 x 3.75 x 6 inches (about 50.8 x 9.5 x 15.2 cm)
- Freshwater capacity: 500 to 1,200 US gallons (about 1,893 to 4,542 litres)
- Saltwater capacity: 150 US gallons (about 568 litres)
- Maximum pressure: 50 PSI (about 3.4 bar)
- Lamp replacement: every 14 months of continuous use
UV dose and flow rate
Dose is given in microwatts per square centimetre at end of lamp life (EOL, the lamp's output when it is due for replacement), as published by Aqua Ultraviolet.
- 30,000 at 1,200 US gallons per hour (about 4,542 L/h), maximum flow
- 45,000 at 800 US gallons per hour (about 3,028 L/h)
- 60,000 at 600 US gallons per hour (about 2,271 L/h)
- 75,000 at 480 US gallons per hour (about 1,817 L/h)
- 90,000 at 400 US gallons per hour (about 1,514 L/h), minimum flow
Aqua Ultraviolet states that 30,000 to 45,000 is ideal for a reef tank, as it preserves planktonic food, and that 75,000 to 90,000 is the most effective range for controlling fish disease in marine fish tanks.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for freshwater aquariums and ponds up to about 4,542 litres and saltwater aquariums up to about 568 litres, plumbed in-line after the filter. Aqua Ultraviolet notes the unit works better on filtered water, as debris blocks UV. Not a replacement for quarantine: UV only treats water passing through the unit, not organisms already on fish.
Care
Turn off the pump and unplug the unit before any maintenance. Replace the lamp every 14 months of continuous use even if it still lights, because its UV output has dropped by then. Clean the quartz sleeve with a limescale remover such as Lime Away or CLR, never an abrasive, and slide the lamp in and out straight so the sleeve does not crack. Aqua Ultraviolet recommends switching the steriliser off while you are medicating fish, as UV may affect the treatment.
Safety
Never look at or handle a lit UV lamp outside its housing; Aqua Ultraviolet warns it can cause severe sunburn and conjunctivitis (eye inflammation). Inside the housing it is safe for people and fish. Do not submerge the unit, and connect it only to an RCD (safety switch) protected outlet. Do not use it if the cord or plug is damaged.
Warranty and delivery
Aqua Ultraviolet's published warranty covers the unit for one year from purchase or 18 months from manufacture, and the housing for life against UV degradation. It asks for registration within 10 days, and excludes quartz sleeve breakage, units not on an earth leakage protected circuit and units fitted with non-genuine parts. This is in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Ships by standard parcel post.
