FAQ
Do I need a water conditioner every time I do a water change?
Yes, for any tap water going into the tank. Chlorine and chloramine are added deliberately to make tap water safe for humans, but both are toxic to fish gills and beneficial filter bacteria at aquarium concentrations. Dose fresh conditioner into new water every time, even for small partial water changes.
Do I need to dose conditioner for evaporation top-off?
No – topping off for evaporation only replaces water that's left the tank, it doesn't introduce new chlorine or chloramine. Only water changes (tap water going in) need conditioner.
Can I use more than the recommended dose?
Some products explicitly allow a higher “emergency” dose for specific situations (see Seachem Prime's note above), but routinely overdosing beyond a brand's stated rate isn't something we'd recommend without a stated reason – stick to the published rate for regular use.
Which conditioner should I pick?
Any of these will safely neutralise chlorine for routine use. Seachem Prime and Safe also detoxify ammonia and nitrite, which is useful during an ammonia spike or new-tank cycling. API Stress Coat and Fluval Water Conditioner add slime-coat protection, which is handy after handling fish or during transport stress.
