The Mangrove Monitor (Varanus chlorostigma) is a large, powerful and semi-aquatic goanna from coastal northern Australia. An excellent swimmer, it is equally at home in water, in trees, and on the ground, making it one of the more versatile of the large Australian monitors. Adults can reach 1.0 to 1.3 metres. This is an advanced species suited to experienced keepers with the space to meet its needs.
A wildlife keeper's licence is required in Queensland. See our Queensland Reptile Licence Guide.
Enclosure
The Mangrove Monitor's semi-aquatic nature means the enclosure must include a large water feature. This is not optional: a pool or container deep enough for the animal to fully submerge and swim in must be part of the setup, along with climbing branches and height to use, sturdy hides, and burrowing substrate on the land area. A custom-built enclosure of at least 2 to 3 metres in length is the minimum for an adult. Good ventilation is important to prevent respiratory issues in a humid environment.
The water area must be filtered or changed very regularly. Monitor waste in standing water quickly becomes a serious hygiene issue. Browse our reptile supplies and filtration range.
Heating
- Basking surface temperature: 45 to 50°C
- Warm ambient: 28 to 32°C
- Cool end and water: 24 to 28°C
- Humidity: higher than arid monitors, around 60 to 70%
Use thermostatically controlled basking lamps over a designated basking area away from the water. Browse our heating and thermostat range.
UVB Lighting
Strong UVB is essential. Use high-output T5 UVB tubes positioned above the land area, on a 10 to 12 hour cycle, replaced every 6 to 12 months. Browse our UVB lighting range.
Feeding
Carnivorous. In the wild, Mangrove Monitors eat fish, crustaceans, birds, and small mammals. In captivity, offer whole prey items including whole fish, whole rodents, day-old chicks, and appropriately sized invertebrates. A varied diet is important. Never feed by hand. Keep the water feature clean: uneaten food in the water degrades rapidly. Browse our frozen feeders.
Handling and Temperament
Mangrove Monitors are active, alert animals. Many settle with regular, calm handling, though individuals vary. This is a large monitor and should be approached and handled with the respect and caution that deserves. Never feed by hand.
