AutoAqua Smart Stir
Reagent mixing that is identical on every test, every time.
The AutoAqua Smart Stir is a rechargeable magnetic stirrer for aquarium water test kits. A magnetic bar goes into the test vial, the vial sits on the base, and the stirrer mixes the reagent hands-free while you get on with something else. It takes vials up to 27 mm in diameter and switches itself off after five minutes.
Why hand-swirling is the weak point in a titration
On a titration test – alkalinity, calcium, magnesium – the result depends on the colour changing at the right drop. That endpoint is only as repeatable as the mixing.
- Hand-swirling varies between tests. Speed, angle and duration change with how much of a hurry you are in, and so does the drop at which the colour turns.
- It varies between people. Two people testing the same water on the same kit can land a drop or two apart, which on an alkalinity kit is a meaningful dKH.
- Unmixed reagent reads early. A drop that has not fully dispersed shows local colour before the sample has actually reached the endpoint.
- Your hands are busy. Swirling with one hand while counting drops from a syringe with the other is where miscounts come from.
Constant, identical agitation removes that variable. It does not make a test kit more accurate than its reagents allow, but it does make consecutive results comparable, which is what actually matters when you are tracking a trend.
What this is, and what it is not
The Smart Stir is a bench-top laboratory-style stirrer for test vials. It is not a dosing container mixer. It runs on an internal battery for five minutes at a time, is not rated for continuous duty, and is not intended to sit inside or under a dosing reservoir keeping supplements in suspension. If you need a solution kept suspended around the clock in a dosing container, this is the wrong tool.

Will my test kit fit?
The only fit question is the diameter of the vial. The holder takes vials up to 27 mm across, which covers the standard round test vials supplied with most aquarium titration kits. Measure the outside of your vial at its widest point before ordering if you are close to the limit.
- Round vials sit in the holder as intended.
- Square and rectangular cuvettes will not seat in a 27 mm round holder.
- Tall narrow vials work, but keep the magnetic bar clear of the syringe tip while you dose.
- Vials over 27 mm – including some larger sample cups – are outside the holder size.
What's included
- Smart Stir base
- Micro USB charging cable
- Stirring bar
- Iron wire, used to lift the magnetic stirring bar back out of a narrow vial
Not included
- A USB power supply. The unit ships with a cable only, and charges from any standard USB 5 V source.
- Test kits, reagents or vials.
- Spare stirring bars – see AutoAqua Magnetic Stir Bar.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for
- Titration kits where a colour endpoint is counted drop by drop – alkalinity, calcium, magnesium
- Reefers testing several parameters in one session
- Anyone whose alkalinity results wander between tests for no obvious reason
- Households where more than one person runs the tests
- Freshwater and marine test kits alike
Not suitable for
- Keeping dosing supplements suspended in a reservoir – it is a five-minute test-bench tool, not continuous-duty
- Vials wider than 27 mm, or square cuvettes
- Mixing anything in the aquarium itself
- Fast chargers – see the safety note below
Safety
- Do not charge the Smart Stir with a fast charger. AutoAqua states this explicitly; a fast charger may damage the unit. Use a standard USB 5 V source.
- Keep the base dry. It is a bench instrument with an internal lithium battery, not aquarium-rated equipment.
- Keep the magnetic stirring bar away from probes, magnetic mounts and anything else that will attract it.
- Rinse the stirring bar between tests. Carry-over reagent on the bar contaminates the next sample.
Care and maintenance
- Rinse and dry the stirring bar after every test and store it with the base so it does not go missing.
- Charge it when the low battery indicator shows rather than leaving it flat between test sessions.
- Wipe spilled reagent off the base promptly – several aquarium reagents stain.
- The five-minute auto shut-off is a power-saving feature, not a fault. Press the button again if a test needs longer.
Goes well with
- AutoAqua Magnetic Stir Bar – the replacement bar for this unit. They are small and easy to lose down a sink, so a spare is worth having.
- Red Sea KH/Alkalinity Pro Testing Kit – the titration where consistent mixing changes the reading most.
- Red Sea Calcium Pro Testing Kit – another drop-counted endpoint that benefits from hands-free stirring.
- Seachem MultiTest Phosphate – a colorimetric test where even reagent dispersion matters before the colour is read.
- Auto Aqua Digital Inline TDS Titanium S1 – for the RO/DI side of your testing routine.
Warranty and delivery
AutoAqua does not publish a warranty term for the Smart Stir. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply to this product and are not limited by any manufacturer's warranty. Ships as a standard parcel. The unit contains a lithium battery, which can restrict air freight on some routes.
Common questions
What is the AutoAqua Smart Stir actually for?
It is a magnetic stirrer for mixing aquarium water test reagents. The magnetic bar goes into the test vial, the vial sits on the base, and the unit agitates the sample consistently while you count drops or wait out a development time. It is a test-bench tool, not a dosing container mixer.
Can I use it to keep my dosing supplements mixed in the reservoir?
No. The Smart Stir runs on an internal battery and shuts off automatically after five minutes, so it cannot hold a solution in suspension continuously. It is designed for the few minutes a water test takes.
What size test vials does it take?
Vials up to 27 mm in diameter, which is the size of the holder. That covers the round vials supplied with most aquarium titration kits. Square cuvettes and anything wider than 27 mm will not seat in the holder.
How is it powered, and how long does it take to charge?
It has a built-in rechargeable lithium battery charged over USB at 5 V, and AutoAqua lists a charge time of 120 minutes. A micro USB cable is supplied; a USB power supply is not.
Why does it turn itself off after five minutes?
That is a deliberate power-saving shut-off, not a fault. Most aquarium tests need far less than five minutes of mixing. If a test needs longer, press the power button again.
Can I charge it with my phone's fast charger?
No. AutoAqua specifically warns against charging the Smart Stir with a fast charger, as it may damage the unit. Use a standard USB 5 V source such as a computer port or a basic USB wall adapter.
