Bioscape 2000L/h Canister Replacement Sponges (2 White/1 Blue)
Three pads, doing the polishing for up to six hundred litres.
This is the genuine BIS542A media set for the Bioscape PRO Easy Clean Canister Filter 2000 L/h – the BIS542, rated for aquariums up to 600 litres. The pack holds three pads: two white fine filter wool pads and one blue foam/wool pad. Together they are the fine mechanical stage, sitting between the coarse pre-filter above and the chemical and biological media below.
Why the white pads are consumable and the blue one is not
These three pads look similar and are treated very differently. Getting that wrong is the most common servicing mistake on this filter.
| Pad | Quantity | Job | How to service it |
|---|---|---|---|
| White fine filter wool | 2 | Polishing. Traps the fine suspended particles that leave water faintly milky even when the coarse stages are clean | Replace every 4 to 6 weeks. Dense wool loses its structure once squeezed and cannot be rinsed indefinitely |
| Blue foam/wool pad | 1 | Denser supporting layer beneath the white wool. Catches what the wool releases and carries a real bacterial population | Rinse gently in aquarium water. Keep it through several white-pad changes |
The same three pads, a much bigger tank
Here is the thing worth knowing about this particular pack. Bioscape supplies two white wool pads and one blue pad with every canister in the PRO range – the 1050, the 1620 and this one. The pads get physically larger as the canister body does, but the count does not change, while the rated tank volume more than doubles from 250 litres to 600.
The practical consequence is that on a well-stocked 600 litre tank, the fine wool tends to reach the short end of Bioscape's 4 to 6 week window rather than the long end. Wool that has gone brown and stiff before the four-week mark is not a defect. It is the pad reporting your stocking level, and it should be changed when it gets there rather than at a date on the calendar.
What you do have on this model is generous biological reserve. The BIS542 carries 11.0 litres of media – the largest in the range – and is uniquely supplied with two ceramic noodle packs and two bio-ball packs, where the smaller canisters get one of each. Your bacterial colony does not live on the white wool. Changing it is a low-risk service on this filter in a way it would never be on a small hang-on unit.

Which PRO canister do I have?
The three PRO canisters have different body sizes, so the pads are cut differently and do not interchange. There is a useful shortcut for identifying the 2000 L/h: it is the only model in the range on 19/25 mm hose. The 1050 and 1620 both run 16/22 mm and share plumbing with each other, so if your hoses came off another Bioscape PRO canister and fitted, you do not have the 2000.
| Filter | Flow | Tanks up to | Media capacity | Pad set | Hose |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PRO Easy Clean Canister 1050 L/h (BIS540) | 1,050 L/h | 250 L | 6.5 L | BIS540A | 16/22 mm |
| PRO Easy Clean Canister 1620 L/h (BIS541) | 1,620 L/h | 400 L | 9.0 L | BIS541A | 16/22 mm |
| PRO Easy Clean Canister 2000 L/h (BIS542) | 2,000 L/h | 600 L | 11.0 L | BIS542A – this page | 19/25 mm |
The model code is also printed on the label on the canister body. BIS542A does not fit the Bioscape Tropic canisters, the Bioscape Stainless Steel canisters or any Bioscape hang-on filter.
Which BIS542 media do I need?
| Code | Pack contents | Stage | Bioscape's service instruction |
|---|---|---|---|
| BIS542A (this page) | 2 white fine wool pads, 1 blue foam/wool pad | Fine mechanical | Replace fine wool every 4 to 6 weeks |
| BIS542B | 1 activated carbon pack – the canister takes two | Chemical | Replace every 4 to 6 weeks |
| BIS542C | 4 pre-filter foams | Coarse mechanical, 1.0 L pre-filter chamber | Rinse monthly |
Unlike the carbon, this pad set is a complete refill on its own. One BIS542A pack replaces the entire fine mechanical stage.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for
- The Bioscape PRO Easy Clean Canister Filter 2000 L/h, freshwater or marine
- Clearing a persistent haze that survives a water change and a pre-filter rinse
- Large, heavily stocked display tanks where fine wool is consumed quickly
- Keeping a spare set on hand so a service is never delayed
Not suitable for
- The 1050 L/h or 1620 L/h PRO canisters – use BIS540A or BIS541A
- Bioscape Tropic canisters, Stainless Steel canisters or hang-on filters
- Removing tannins, odours or medication – wool adsorbs nothing, that is the carbon pack
- Replacing your biological media – the ceramic noodles and bio-balls carry that load
Care and maintenance
- Change the white pads, keep the blue one. Replacing all three at once removes bacteria unnecessarily. Swap the two white wool pads and rinse the blue pad back into service.
- Rinse in aquarium water, never the tap. Chlorinated water kills the bacterial population on the blue pad, which is the reason for keeping it.
- Rinse the pre-filter first. If the 1.0 litre coarse chamber above is clogged, fresh white wool will be brown again within days. Servicing the pre-filter monthly is what lets this pack last its full interval.
- Have a bucket ready. This is a large canister at 280 x 280 x 500 mm holding 11.0 litres of media, and it is heavy and full of water when you lift it out. Disconnect it over a towel, not over carpet.
- Switch off at the wall before opening the canister. This is a 240 V mains-powered filter with a 300 W integrated heater, and a heater left powered in air can crack.
- Check the impeller if flow does not return. If fresh pads and a clean pre-filter do not restore output, the fault is mechanical rather than a media problem.
Goes well with
- Bioscape 2000L/h Canister Pre-Filter Foam 4 Pack (BIS542C) – the coarse stage above these pads. Keeping it rinsed is what makes fine wool last four weeks instead of one.
- Bioscape 2000L/h Canister Carbon Cartridge (BIS542B) – same 4 to 6 week interval, so it makes sense to hold both. Remember this canister takes two carbon packs.
- Bioscape Premium Fine Filter Wool 6 Pack – cut-to-fit sheet wool for topping up between genuine pad changes.
- Bioscape Replace Canister Seal Ring – the part to have on the shelf before you open the canister, not after.
- Bioscape PRO Easy Clean Canister Filter with Heater – the filter range these pads belong to.
Warranty and delivery
Bioscape warrants the PRO canister filters for 2 years. Filter media is a consumable and is not covered by that term. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply to this product and are not limited by any manufacturer's warranty. Ships as a standard parcel.
Common questions
What is in the BIS542A pack?
Three pads: two white fine filter wool pads and one blue foam/wool pad, cut for the Bioscape PRO Easy Clean Canister Filter 2000 L/h. The white pads are the consumable polishing stage and the blue pad is a rinseable supporting layer. One pack is a complete refill of the fine mechanical stage.
How often should the white wool pads be replaced?
Bioscape specifies replacing fine wool every 4 to 6 weeks across the PRO canister range. On the 2000 L/h model, which services tanks up to 600 litres with the same three pads supplied to the smaller canisters, heavily stocked setups will reach that point at the shorter end. Change the pads when they stay brown and stiff after a rinse rather than waiting out the full six weeks.
Can I rinse the white pads instead of replacing them?
Once or twice, to stretch the interval. Fine wool is dense by design and loses its structure as it is squeezed, so it stops catching the fine particles it exists to trap. A pad that stays discoloured and compressed after rinsing is restricting flow rather than filtering.
Will replacing the white pads crash my cycle?
It should not on this filter. The BIS542 carries 11.0 litres of media and is supplied with two ceramic noodle packs and two bio-ball packs, so the bulk of the bacterial colony lives well away from the fine wool. Leave the blue pad and the biological media undisturbed during the change and the colony carries through comfortably.
Will BIS542A fit my 1050 or 1620 L/h Bioscape canister?
No. The 1050 L/h BIS540 takes BIS540A and the 1620 L/h BIS541 takes BIS541A. A quick way to confirm which you have: the 2000 L/h is the only PRO canister on 19/25 mm hose, while the other two share 16/22 mm.
My water is still hazy after fitting new pads. What now?
Check the 1.0 litre coarse pre-filter above them, which is the usual culprit, then the lid seal and the impeller. Persistent fine haze that survives clean mechanical media is often a bacterial bloom rather than a filtration fault, and that clears on its own once the tank stabilises.
