Bioscape Spider Wood Large 40 - 50cm
Fine, twisting root wood sized for standard to larger scapes. Bioscape Spider Wood Large is slender, branching root wood, sized to build tree and root-tangle structures in tanks that need presence without going to full XLarge scale.
Key features
- 40-50 cm grade — the second-largest size in Bioscape's Spider Wood range, between Medium (30-40 cm) and XLarge (50-60 cm).
- Slender, twisting branches — fine root-and-branch shapes that build convincing tree and root-tangle structures rather than bulky driftwood chunks.
- Lower tannin release — Bioscape's Spider Wood releases noticeably less tannin than Mopani or Malaysian driftwood, so water tinting is milder.
- Every piece unique — as a natural product, exact shape and colour vary piece to piece; the listing photo is a representative sample.

Which size do I need?
Bioscape grades Spider Wood by branch length: Small (20-30 cm) suits nano and shrimp tanks, Medium (30-40 cm) suits nano to mid-size layouts, Large (40-50 cm, this listing) suits standard to larger tanks wanting a fuller tree structure, and XLarge (50-60 cm) is scaled for centrepiece layouts in large tanks. Move up a grade if you want the branching to read as a dominant feature rather than an accent.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for freshwater aquascaping, and also used in reptile enclosures and terrarium or paludarium builds. Bioscape doesn't publish a marine-safe claim for Spider Wood, so treat it as a freshwater and terrarium product.
Care and maintenance
New Spider Wood is dried for shipping and floats — weighting pieces down for about a week is usually enough for them to waterlog and sit on their own. Some pieces can take longer depending on density. Presoaking or boiling speeds up sinking and helps reduce tannin release. A harmless white biofilm sometimes forms on new wood underwater; it isn't dangerous and is often grazed off by shrimp, snails and some fish.

Common questions
How many pieces will I get?
Spider Wood is sold by size grade rather than a fixed single-piece order, and because it's a natural product the exact piece count varies between deliveries. Contact us before ordering if you need a specific number of pieces for a planned layout.
Will it turn my water brown?
Some tannin release is normal with any natural wood, but Bioscape's Spider Wood releases noticeably less than Mopani or Malaysian driftwood. Presoaking or boiling reduces it further.
Does it float?
Yes, initially. New wood is dried for shipping and needs weighting down — most pieces waterlog and sink within about a week, though denser pieces can take longer.
Is it safe for shrimp?
Yes. Spider Wood is considered safe for shrimp, plecos and other tank inhabitants, and the biofilm that sometimes forms on new wood is a food source rather than a hazard.
