A tighter beam throws real heat further into the enclosure. The Exo Terra Intense Basking Spot Lamp uses a reflector-shaped bulb to concentrate its output into a narrow beam, delivering roughly 35% more heat and light within that beam than a standard basking bulb of the same wattage. That lets you mount it higher above tall enclosures while still landing a genuinely hot basking spot on the branch or rock below. It supplies heat, visible light and UVA — it runs alongside a UVB lamp rather than replacing one.

Which wattage do I need?
Match the wattage to enclosure size and how far the bulb sits above the basking branch or rock, not to the animal alone. As a broad starting point: 50 W suits small to medium enclosures with the bulb mounted close to the basking spot; 75–100 W suits medium to large enclosures or a higher mounting position; 150 W suits large, tall enclosures or cooler rooms where more heat needs to travel further before it reaches the target temperature. Always confirm the actual surface temperature at the basking spot with a thermometer or temp gun after installing — ambient room temperature, enclosure height and reflector fixture all shift the numbers below.
Heat gradient by distance
Exo Terra publishes estimated surface temperatures at set distances from the bulb, measured at a 20°C (68°F) ambient room temperature. Your result will run warmer in a heated reptile room and cooler in an air-conditioned one.

At 10 cm every wattage in this range exceeds 50°C — never mount this close to the animal or to any surface it can climb onto, and always run it through a guard if there's any chance of contact.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for diurnal, basking reptiles and amphibians — bearded dragons, blue-tongue skinks, turtles basking out of water, and similar baskers — as the heat and light source in the basking zone of a thermal gradient. Not a source of UVB: species that need UVB for calcium metabolism still need a dedicated UVB lamp running alongside this bulb, not instead of it. Not suitable as the only heat source for nocturnal or fossorial species that don't use overhead basking spots — a ceramic heat emitter or under-tank heater with a mat thermostat generally suits those better.
Safety
Run this bulb through a thermostat rather than a plug-in timer alone — a timer controls when the bulb is on, not how hot the basking spot gets. A dimming thermostat suits an incandescent-style reflector bulb like this one best, holding a steady temperature without the on/off cycling some pulse-proportional thermostats cause on lamp loads (pulse-proportional units are built for ceramic heat emitters and radiant panels). Mount it where the animal cannot climb onto the bulb or its fixture, use a guard in any enclosure housing a climbing species, and check the basking surface temperature with a thermometer after every bulb change. 220–240 V AU mains; fit into a fixture rated for the bulb's wattage.
Running costs
Basking bulbs typically run on a daytime cycle rather than continuously — the estimate below assumes 12 hours a day, a typical diurnal photoperiod, at an approximate 30c/kWh household tariff. Actual cost depends on your tariff and how many hours a day the thermostat keeps the bulb switched on.

Care and maintenance
Replace the bulb if the beam dims noticeably, if it flickers, or roughly every 12 months as routine maintenance — heat and light output fall gradually with age even before a bulb fails outright. Allow the bulb to cool fully before handling, and avoid splashing it with water from misting or spraying, which can crack a hot bulb.

Common questions
Does this bulb provide UVB?
No. It provides heat, visible light and UVA only. Species that need UVB for calcium metabolism need a separate, dedicated UVB lamp running alongside it.
Can I control it with a normal light timer?
A timer switches the bulb on and off but doesn't limit the temperature it reaches. Run it through a thermostat so the basking spot holds a safe, steady temperature rather than climbing unchecked.
How close can I mount it to the basking spot?
Exo Terra hasn't published a minimum distance for this bulb. All four wattages exceed 50°C at 10 cm in the manufacturer's own chart, so keep enough clearance that the animal can't reach the bulb or its fixture, and confirm the actual surface temperature with a thermometer once it's installed.
What's the difference between the four wattages?
Wattage changes how much heat and light the beam carries and how far it reaches before dropping to background temperature — see the gradient table above. Beam angle, fitting and UVA/UVB output are the same across all four.
Will this also work as the only light source in the enclosure?
It supplies focused basking light rather than general enclosure lighting. Most keepers pair it with broader ambient lighting and, where the species needs it, a UVB tube or bulb running on its own fixture.
