Thermostat
Required - dimming thermostat for light-emitting basking/halogen bulbs, pulse-proportional or on/off for ceramic heat emitters, matched to whichever bulb is fitted
Exo Terra Porcelain Wire Clamp Lamp
A heat-resistant fixture built to run a ceramic emitter or basking bulb safely. The Exo Terra Porcelain Wire Clamp Lamp is a heat-resistant porcelain-socket light fixture with a protective wire guard, an aluminium reflector and a spring clamp for mounting on mesh or bracket, available in two sizes rated for different maximum bulb wattages.
Key features
- Heat-resistant porcelain socket — built to run hot-running bulbs continuously without the socket itself degrading.
- Wire guard — keeps the animal and enclosure furnishings off the bulb itself, reducing burn and fire risk from direct contact.
- Aluminium reflector — directs more of the bulb's heat and light down into the enclosure instead of out into the room.
- Spring-loaded clamp — mounts on a mesh screen top or the Exo Terra Light Bracket without extra hardware.
- Runs several bulb types — ceramic heat emitters, mercury vapour bulbs, incandescent and screw-based CFL bulbs, provided you stay within the fixture's wattage rating.

Exo Terra's own product pages list a maximum of 250 W in the feature bullets on both the Small and Large listings, which conflicts with the 150 W figure stated in the running text on the same pages. Independent Australian and US retailer listings tie 150 W specifically to the Small fixture (RP04) and 250 W specifically to the Large (RP05), so we've published those figures rather than the higher bullet-point number on both. If you're running a bulb close to either limit, check the rating printed on the fixture itself.
Heat and UV output — this is the fixture, not the bulb
This product is a lamp holder. It does not itself produce heat, light or UV — that comes entirely from whatever bulb you fit. For the actual temperature-by-distance or UV-index-by-distance figures, check the gradient table published on that bulb's own product page, and make sure the bulb's wattage is within this fixture's rated maximum above.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
- Suitable for mounting ceramic heat emitters, halogen and mercury-vapour basking bulbs, and incandescent heat bulbs up to the fixture's rated wattage.
- Not a substitute for a thermostat — light-emitting basking or halogen bulbs and ceramic heat emitters both need thermostatic control to prevent overheating.
- Not rated for use on plastic or acrylic mesh — mount on a metal mesh screen top or a proper light bracket.
Safety
Fit a thermostat rated for your bulb type — dimming for light-emitting bulbs, pulse-proportional or on/off for ceramic heat emitters. Never exceed the fixture's rated wattage; running a bulb over the limit risks socket failure and fire. Keep the wire guard in place at all times so animals and furnishings can't reach the bulb.
Care and maintenance
Wipe the reflector and guard down periodically to keep reflectivity up and dust off the socket. Check the clamp spring tension occasionally — a loose clamp is the most common cause of a fixture working itself free over time.
Goes well with
Pair with a dimming or pulse thermostat matched to your bulb type, and with the Exo Terra Light Bracket if your enclosure doesn't have a mesh top to clamp onto.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by the Exo Terra manufacturer's warranty against defects, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Standard freight — small, lightweight item.
Common questions
Can I use this fixture with a UVB bulb?
No — UVB tube and compact bulbs need a specific UVB-rated fixture. This porcelain wire clamp lamp is for heat-emitting bulbs: ceramic heat emitters, halogen, mercury vapour and incandescent heat bulbs.
Do I still need a separate thermostat?
Yes. This fixture has no built-in temperature control — it's a socket, reflector and guard only. Any bulb run through it needs a thermostat sized for that bulb type.
Which size do I need?
Match the fixture to your bulb's wattage: the Small (RP04) is rated to 150 W, the Large (RP05) to 250 W. Check the wattage printed on your bulb's packaging before choosing.
Can I mount this directly to a glass terrarium wall?
No — the spring clamp is designed to grip a metal mesh screen top or the Exo Terra Light Bracket, not smooth glass.
