Exo Terra Reptile Cave
A rock hide your reptile can trust, sized to the animal not the enclosure. The Exo Terra Reptile Cave is a realistically moulded rock hide with a hollow interior, giving geckos, snakes, dragons and tortoises a dark, enclosed retreat to shelter, sleep and shed in. It's open along the base rather than fully enclosed, so it sits flat over substrate or a heat mat without trapping moisture underneath, and the flat top doubles as a basking ledge. Five sizes run from Small, suited to geckos and hatchlings, through to Extra Extra Large for tortoises and monitors.
Key features
- Realistic rock moulding – blends into a naturalistic or bioactive setup rather than sitting on top of it.
- Open-bottomed design – no enclosed floor, so it sits directly over a heat mat or substrate without insulating it or trapping damp underneath.
- Flat top doubles as a basking ledge – usable space, not just a hide.
- Single entrance, divided interior – a main chamber plus a smaller corner space, so a sheltering animal isn't left sitting in the open doorway.
- Inert, easy-clean material – wipes down and won't leach into water or substrate.

Exo Terra doesn't publish Extra Large and Extra Extra Large dimensions on its own site; those two figures above are sourced from an Australian Exo Terra stockist's product data for these exact SKUs (CHL73 / CHL74) rather than Exo Terra directly. The Small, Medium and Large figures are converted from the manufacturer's own measurements.
Which size do I need?
Match the cave to the animal, not the tank. Small suits geckos, froglets and hatchlings. Medium suits most adult geckos and small skinks. Large suits adult bearded dragons and similarly sized lizards. Extra Large and Extra Extra Large step up again for larger monitors, big-bodied snakes that need room to coil, and tortoises using the cave as a burrow-style retreat rather than a tight squeeze.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suited to terrestrial reptiles and amphibians in vivariums, terrariums and paludariums, including bioactive setups, where the open base lets substrate fauna move underneath. Not a basking lamp mount – the material isn't rated to hold a heat lamp fitting, so any basking light should be positioned above the flat top rather than attached to it.
Care and maintenance
Wipe out with warm water and a reptile-safe cleaner during routine enclosure maintenance. The inert moulded material doesn't absorb odour or bacteria the way porous natural rock can, so it doesn't need soaking.
Goes well with
Pair with an EcoTech Analog Hygrometer Thermometer to check the warm and cool ends of the enclosure actually reach the temperature you're aiming for, Zoo Med Repti Bark Chips as a natural substrate to bed the cave into, and a Zoo Med Repti Sand Scooper for spot-cleaning around the entrance.
Warranty and delivery

Common questions
Can I put a heat mat under the cave?
Yes – the open base is designed for exactly this, sitting flat over a heat mat or heated substrate without trapping moisture the way a fully enclosed hide would.
How many caves does one enclosure need?
At least two – one at the warm end and one at the cool end – so your reptile never has to choose between feeling secure and reaching the right temperature.
What size should I buy for an adult bearded dragon?
Large is generally the right fit for an adult bearded dragon. Step up to Extra Large if you keep a particularly large individual or want room to spare.
Is the top strong enough to bask on?
Yes – the flat top is designed to double as a basking ledge.
