Suitable for reptile and amphibian enclosures as an everyday check. Not suitable as the only control for a heat source: heaters need a thermostat. For species with narrow temperature or humidity needs, a digital gauge with a probe gives a closer reading.

Place the gauge at the height your animal spends time, not at the top of the enclosure near the lamps, so the reading reflects what the animal feels. Check it now and then against a digital thermometer, as analogue gauges can drift.
