What you'll still need
This is a habitat kit, not a complete life-support system, and Exo Terra doesn't include everything a specific species needs.
- A heat source – no heat mat, ceramic heat emitter or basking lamp is included. Most tropical species kept in this size enclosure need supplementary heat; choose one sized to your species and this enclosure's volume.
- A compact fluorescent bulb for the Compact Top – Exo Terra's own materials describe the canopy as a fixture built for its Repti Glo compact fluorescent bulbs, but don't state plainly whether a bulb ships in the box. Check at checkout, or contact us before you buy, if this matters to your setup.
- Species-appropriate live plants or additional decor, if you want more planting than the two jungle plants included.
- A misting routine or automated mister to maintain rainforest humidity – none is included.

Both kits share the same front-opening door design, screen top ventilation and Compact Top lighting canopy. The Medium Tall gives roughly triple the floor area and more vertical climbing height than the Small, which matters more than raw volume for arboreal species that spend most of their time off the ground.
Suitable for – and not suitable for
Suited to arboreal and semi-arboreal tropical species that climb more than they burrow – geckos, tree frogs and similar animals that use vertical space. Exo Terra notes it also works as temporary housing for juveniles of larger species. Not suitable as a permanent enclosure for adults of species that outgrow a 45 × 45 × 60 cm footprint, and not a bioactive or aquatic setup as supplied – the substrate and decor included are for a standard tropical terrestrial/arboreal setup, not a paludarium.
Setup and use
The terrarium's full metal screen top is designed to let UVB pass through from lighting mounted on or above it, so a UVB-capable bulb can be used in the Compact Top fixture if your species needs it. Fit the rock background and decor before adding substrate, then build up humidity gradually with regular misting once the enclosure is planted and furnished.
Safety
Any heat or UVB lamp added to this enclosure should be mounted at the distance the bulb's own manufacturer specification states – Exo Terra publishes temperature-by-distance and UV-index-by-distance charts for its heat bulbs, ceramic heat emitters and UVB lamps individually, and the correct mounting distance depends on which bulb you choose, not on this terrarium alone. Use a thermostat with any heat-emitting bulb.

Does the Compact Top come with a bulb fitted?

What species is the Medium Tall kit best for?
Mid-sized climbing species such as crested geckos, White's tree frogs and red-eyed tree frogs, per Exo Terra's own species guidance for this kit.
Can I use this for a species that needs higher humidity, like a paludarium setup?
Not as supplied – the included substrate and decor are for a standard tropical terrestrial/arboreal setup rather than a water-feature paludarium.
