Rated flow and real flow are two different numbers — this page publishes both. The Fluval 07 Series is a four-model external canister range — 107, 207, 307 and 407 — covering tanks from 40 L up to 500 L. Each size uses the same multi-stage layout: mechanical, biological and chemical media in lift-out baskets, driven by a self-priming pump.

Key features
  • Lift-out media baskets — stacked baskets pull out as one unit for media changes, no loose media to spill.
  • Self-priming pump — a built-in primer starts water flow without manual suction.
  • Quiet, sump-style motor head — sits below or beside the tank on a cabinet shelf, out of sight.
  • One range, four sizes — 107 through 407 share the same media format, so upgrading tanks doesn't mean relearning the filter.
  • Ships with starter media — Bio-Foam mechanical/biological media pre-loaded in the baskets, ready to run.
Specifications
Model Aquarium size Pump output Wattage (AU, 230–240V/50Hz) Max head
107 40–130 L (10–30 US gal) 550 L/h 10 W 1.45 m
207 60–220 L (20–45 US gal) 780 L/h 10 W 1.45 m
307 90–330 L (40–70 US gal) 1,150 L/h 15 W 1.75 m
407 150–500 L (50–100 US gal) 1,450 L/h 20 W 2.25 m
Performance — flow with media loaded

The pump output above is measured clean, with no media resistance. Once the baskets are loaded with mechanical, biological and chemical media, real circulation drops — this is the figure that actually reaches your tank, and it's the one Fluval publishes alongside the rated pump output.

Model Pump output (unloaded) Filter circulation (media loaded)
107 550 L/h 360 L/h
207 780 L/h 460 L/h
307 1,150 L/h 780 L/h
407 1,450 L/h 930 L/h

A 407 quoted on the box at 1,450 L/h settles to roughly 930 L/h once its media baskets are doing their job — still a strong turnover on a 500 L tank, but not the headline number.

Which 07 Series filter do I need?

Match the filter to your actual water volume, not the tank's advertised size — substrate, rock and decor all displace water. As a rule of thumb, aim for at least 4–6× your tank volume in filter circulation per hour: a 200 L tank wants a 307 (780 L/h loaded) rather than a 207 (460 L/h loaded) if it's moderately stocked.

Will it fit my tank?

All four models sit externally, so internal tank clearance isn't a factor — what matters is cabinet space below or beside the aquarium. The 107 and 207 share a compact 19 × 18 cm footprint; the 307 and 407 step up to 24 × 18 cm. Height ranges from 35 cm (107) to 49 cm (407).

Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suitable for freshwater and marine aquariums within the rated volume for each size. Not intended for ponds or systems above 500 L — step up to Fluval's FX Series for larger volumes.

Running costs and noise

Run continuously, a 107 or 207 (10 W) costs roughly 88 kWh a year to run; a 307 (15 W) around 131 kWh; a 407 (20 W) around 175 kWh — all estimated at 24/7 operation and a 30c/kWh tariff, before your actual usage or rate.

Care and maintenance

Clean the mechanical media (rinse in tank water, don't rinse under tap water) every 2–4 weeks depending on bioload. Replace chemical media such as carbon monthly. Leave biological media largely undisturbed, replacing only half the volume at a time, once or twice a year, to protect the bacteria colony.

Common questions

Why is the real flow lower than the number on the box?

The box figure is measured with a clean, empty canister. Once mechanical, biological and chemical media are loaded, resistance through the baskets reduces flow — that's normal, and it's the loaded figure in the table above that reflects what actually reaches the tank.

Can I use a 107 on a bigger tank if I don't mind slower turnover?

You can, but bioload matters more than water volume — a heavily stocked tank will overwhelm a filter sized for its litres alone. Size up if you're running more than a light stocking level.

Do these need priming by hand?

No — all four models in the 07 Series have a built-in self-priming mechanism; fill the canister, connect the hoses and prime with the built-in primer.

What media comes in the box?

Each unit ships with Bio-Foam media pre-loaded as a starter — add carbon or other chemical media separately if you want it from day one.
