Hikari Algae Wafers

A dense, slow-sinking wafer built for the fish that clean up after everyone else. Hikari Algae Wafers are a vegetable-forward sinking food for plecos, corydoras, otocinclus and other algae-grazing fish in both freshwater and marine aquariums, sold in 20 g, 40 g, 82 g and 250 g packs to suit anything from a single bristlenose to a busy pleco tank.

Key features
  • Vegetable-forward recipe – built around seaweed meal, alfalfa and spirulina rather than a straight fish-meal pellet, matching the largely herbivorous diet of algae eaters.
  • Rapid, controlled sink rate – reaches the bottom quickly instead of drifting, so it's still there when nocturnal grazers come out to feed.
  • Holds together in water – stays intact for grazing rather than dissolving into cloud within minutes.
  • Garlic and chlorella included – added as feeding stimulants and immune support, not just filler.
  • Stabilised vitamin C – L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate resists breakdown in water better than plain ascorbic acid.
  • One food for fresh and marine – the same wafer suits freshwater plecos and marine herbivores such as tangs that graze algae.

Feeding directions

Feed no more than your fish will fully consume within two hours. Many algae eaters are nocturnal, so a wafer dropped in late in the evening or just before lights-out is usually taken up better than one fed in the middle of the day. Remove any uneaten wafer after the feeding period rather than leaving it to break down in the tank.

Suitable for and not suitable for

Suitable as a staple food for plecos, corydoras, otocinclus, other bottom-dwelling algae grazers, and marine herbivores such as tangs. Not a complete diet on its own for predominantly carnivorous bottom feeders – pair it with a protein-based sinking food for those species.

Storage

Hikari doesn't publish a shelf life once opened. Keep the pack sealed, in a cool spot out of direct sunlight, and reseal firmly after each use to protect the vitamin content.

Common questions

Will this wafer cloud the water?

It's formulated to hold together rather than crumble, so it stays intact for grazing instead of dissolving into the water column – remove any leftover piece after a couple of hours regardless.

Can I feed this to marine tangs as well as freshwater plecos?

Yes – the same wafer is formulated for algae-grazing fish in both freshwater and marine setups.

What size pack do I need?

The 20 g and 40 g packs suit a single pleco or a small algae-eating crew; the 82 g and 250 g packs are sized for larger tanks or several grazers sharing the load.

Is this a complete diet on its own?

For herbivorous and omnivorous algae grazers, yes. For fish that need more protein, use it alongside a protein-rich sinking food.
