Ocean Nutrition Frozen Lance Fish
A whole, natural prey fish for predators that need the real thing.
Ocean Nutrition Frozen Lance Fish (Hypomesus sp.) is a single-ingredient frozen food, snap-frozen shortly after collection to preserve its natural nutrient profile. Each 100 g blister pack holds roughly 25 whole lance fish, around 6–8 cm long, sized for predatory marine and freshwater fish and larger anemones that take whole prey.
Key features
- One ingredient — lance fish, nothing added.
- Whole prey format — triggers a natural feeding response in predatory species that flakes and pellets don't.
- Snap-frozen at source — frozen immediately after collection, so the nutrient profile isn't degraded by delayed processing.
- Consistent sizing — fish run 6–8 cm, so you can match portion to mouth size before you thaw a whole pack.
- No wastage from the fridge — thaw only what you need; the rest stays frozen.

Suitable for — and not suitable for
Suitable for predatory marine and freshwater fish large enough to take whole prey 6–8 cm long — think lionfish, groupers, larger puffers, oscars and similar predatory cichlids, and anemones that accept whole-fish feeding.
Not suitable as a sole diet for small or non-predatory community fish, and not sized for fry or nano species — our Marine Fish Eggs or Micro Plankton suit those instead.
Feeding directions
Feed 2 to 5 times a day, offering only what your fish will eat within 5 minutes. Remove uneaten portions to keep water quality up.
Thawing, storage and cold chain
Thaw a portion in a small container of aquarium water rather than under a tap, then feed once fully thawed. Never refreeze thawed food — thaw only what you'll use in that feeding. Keep the pack frozen in your own freezer between uses, and carry it home in an insulated bag on a hot day so it doesn't begin thawing in transit.
Goes well with
Rotate with other Ocean Nutrition frozen foods, such as Marine Mix or Mysis, for dietary variety, and keep a pair of feeding tongs or a turkey baster on hand for target-feeding shy predators.
Warranty and delivery
As a frozen perishable food, this product is covered by the consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law relating to acceptable quality on arrival, in addition to any manufacturer assurance. It is sold and shipped frozen — as with any frozen product, keep it cold on the way home and into your freezer promptly.
Common questions
Can I feed lance fish to community tank fish?
Only if they're large enough to take a whole 6–8 cm fish. For smaller community fish, a mix product like Ocean Nutrition Marine Mix is a better fit.
Do I need to rinse the fish before feeding?
Thawing in a small amount of aquarium water and feeding straight after is enough for most tanks. A quick rinse in fresh water is only necessary if you're being cautious about introducing thaw liquid to a sensitive system.
Can I refreeze a pack once it's been opened?
The pack itself can go back in the freezer between uses — it's only the individual fish you've thawed for a feed that should never be refrozen.
Will anemones eat lance fish?
Larger anemone species will take whole lance fish offered directly to their tentacles or oral disc — this is one of the uses the manufacturer specifically calls out for the product.
How many fish are in a pack?
Roughly 25 whole lance fish per 100 g pack, based on the typical 6–8 cm size.
