Quail 3 Week

A three-week-old frozen quail, a solid step-up feeder once mice have been outgrown. Quail 3 Week is a whole frozen coturnix quail at roughly three weeks of age, feathers and all, sold as a single bird ready to thaw. It suits reptiles that have moved past mouse-sized prey but aren't yet ready for a full-grown quail.

Key features
  • Three-week size class — typically around 100 g, more than double a 2-week bird.
  • Whole animal, single ingredient — nothing added, nothing removed.
  • A genuine step between 2-week quail and adult-sized birds — useful for reptiles growing quickly.
  • Frozen, not live — no feeding-response risk to your reptile and nothing to house or care for before use.

Size grading and choosing the right feeder

Feeder quail are graded by age rather than named size classes, since weight climbs quickly week to week. Choose a bird close to the widest part of the reptile's body, the same way you would size a mouse.

Age Typical weight Guide
Day Old Approx. 8 g Small snakes and hatchling monitors
1 Week Approx. 23 g Mid-sized snakes and monitors
2 Week Approx. 47 g Larger snakes and monitors
3 Week (this product) Approx. 100 g Larger snakes and monitors stepping up in prey size
4 Week Approx. 155 g Large snakes and adult monitors
5 Week Approx. 175 g Large snakes and adult monitors
6 Week Approx. 215 g Large to very large snakes, adult monitors and birds of prey

These weight figures are typical for the age class and are a guide, not a guarantee — individual birds vary. We currently stock the full range from day-old through to 6-week quail.

Ingredients

100% whole quail, frozen. No additives, colours, preservatives or fillers — this is an intact animal, not a formulated food.

A guaranteed analysis (crude protein, fat, fibre, moisture, ash) is not published for whole-prey items the way it is for manufactured pellets or flakes, because there is no manufacturer formulation to declare. Whole prey supplies muscle, organ, bone and feather in natural proportions, which is the basis of a whole-prey feeding diet for carnivorous reptiles.

Suitable for, and not suitable for
  • Suitable for: larger carnivorous snakes and monitors ready to move up from 2-week quail or large mice, and as a variety feed alongside mice for species that accept both.
  • Not suitable for: hatchlings, small juveniles, or any reptile whose usual prey is mouse-sized or smaller — a 3-week quail is oversized for them.
How to thaw and store

Keep frozen until you're ready to feed. Thaw in a sealed bag in the fridge, or in room-temperature water changed every 10–15 minutes, until soft all the way through — never in a microwave, which cooks prey unevenly. At this size, check the body cavity is soft, not just the surface, before offering it. Warm the thawed quail in warm water for a few minutes before offering it, as many reptiles respond better to a warm feed. Never refreeze a thawed quail — feed it the same day or discard it.

Handling and hygiene

Treat frozen prey like raw meat: thaw it separately from human food, wash your hands and any tongs or containers after handling, and disinfect the thawing area. Discard any uneaten thawed prey rather than offering it to another animal.

Goes well with
  • Zoo Med Plastic Feeding Tongs — more hygienic than fingers when offering thawed prey of this size, and lets you add a little movement to trigger a feeding response.
Warranty and delivery

This is a frozen product and ships and is stored frozen. There's no manufacturer warranty on a food item as such — the consumer guarantee under Australian Consumer Law that the product is of acceptable quality and matches its description still applies. Transfer it to your own freezer as soon as it arrives.

Common questions

Why move up to a 3-week quail?

It's a natural step once a reptile has outgrown mouse-sized prey but isn't ready for a full adult bird — the size gap between 2-week quail and larger birds is a big one.

How many quail come in a pack?

One bird per pack, sold individually so you can buy exactly the number of feeds you need.

Can I refreeze a thawed quail?

No. Once it's thawed, feed it the same day or discard it.

What size reptile suits a 3-week quail?

Larger snakes and monitors whose body width is close to the bird's — compare against the size table above before buying.

Is a 3-week quail bulkier than a mouse of similar weight?

Yes — quail carry more of their mass as body and bone relative to length than a mouse, so a 100 g quail feeds like a noticeably bigger prey item than a 100 g mouse would.
